This collection of short linked fiction develops themes such as race, memory, betrayal, and solitude, explored through the lens of how the young protagonist Rika Noordzij navigates her troubled environment. Somewhat hybrid in terms of genre, these pieces work as self-contained narratives, while also forming a fragmented whole (novella), through the strong thematic, metaphoric and stylistic links, as well as the unifying force of the main protagonist Rika Noordzij. The central challenge of this project has been to hone a narrative technique which aligns the reader closely with the child protagonist. Rika's observations are a primary tool, especially those of the adult interactions around her; though she may not fully comprehend this larger world, her perceptions of its mysterious violence establishes layers of meaning and suggestion. Throughout the collection, my primary interest has been in the use of language and imagery to establish the perspective of Rika Noordzij.

Inspector Harry Chin was a third generation Chinese born in Australia. His grandfather, Dong Shi Chin, had come over to Australia just after the Second World War and the resumption of the great civil war in China between Mao Tse Tung and Chiang Kai Shek. Australia has never been very homogenous, the Aussies prided themselves on the fact that Australia was a former British Penal Colony, and the descendants had inherited the murderous, pirate spirit of their forebears. I guess you could say that the Aussies were rather particular in their views about who should be allowed to immigrate into their—stolen land. Well, the United States had that same attitude since they stole their land too. Harry Chin had worked his way up the ladder with the Australian Federal Police. No easy task with the all-white force. But the High Commissioner felt with the threat of organized crime—namely the Chinese Triads--that having a Chinese Detective who could actually speak that God awful heathen language might perhaps come in handy down the road. As it turned out, Harry Chin had one of the highest solve rates on the force. The main headquarters for the Australian Federal Police was in the Capital of Canberra, between Sidney and Melbourne. Harry had a partner that he had acquired five years earlier. He also was a rarity on the Federal Police. He was an aboriginal, or better known as a Palawa by the name of Ash Friday. They probably assigned Ash to Harry Chin as a crude racist joke. But the joke was on them, because Ash Friday was not only a damn fine partner and officer—but a great outdoorsman. This first in the Harry Chin Murder Mysteries, takes place on the island of Tasmania. Three, young, junior high school girls have mysteriously disappeared and Harry Chin and Ash Friday are sent from Canberra by their boss to solve the case and save the day and to do it quickly--or else!.

Story #2. In sixth grade, before we moved here, I wrote a horrible story about a Tasmanian Devil that massacred mean girls who bullied me off my soccer team. It was disgusting. However, my friend Halliday Anne Kirsh pestered me to let her steal it for a writing composition. Naturally, she got caught and the whole thing turned into a mess. But strangely, it also got me dragged into a couple of 7th grade classes at Public Grammar for no credit (on top of my home schooling.) This caused even more problems such as huge fights over climate change and slavery. Also being disgusted with the Catholic Religion when a friend of mine got kicked out of Blessed Trinity because her crooky father got caught and ran out of money. Plus, a teacher tricked my mother into giving her credit for inventing my reading improvement method of narrating stories into the computer and then fixing it with a pencil until I drop dead from tiredness. So what was I supposed to do about that? Whenever more disasters happen my father says that old Tasmanian Devil is starting trouble again!

"Devils to me," a siren call that would bring every Tasmanian running to answer no matter what they were doing. Repeated over and over by those answering the call, it would empty bars or a base or a city of Tasmanians, because no member of the elite unit would desert a brother in trouble, reinforcing their unofficial motto, Et Anima Una, Of One Mind.Jolie is the only female in the elite all male Tasmanian special forces group and loving every crazy minute of it-well, except for being made a squad leader. A duty no Tasmanian would want since it means having to make life and death decisions that impact their brothers' lives. But Jolie's true-father's emphasis on Ready, in Ready, Aim, Fire, has proved beneficial on each of her previous assignments, earning her the call sign Fox and giving her a unique latitude on her assignments-a squad leader with no orders or direction. Because, while Jolie can be unpredictable, she never disappoints and always has her squad in the thick of the action. As one Tasmanian commander commented: "That exemplifies Et Anima Una like nothing else could. Jolie walks off to only the space gods know with no orders or direction, and we think it's normal."

For those who have had the luxury of an extended family, namely pets, and more specifically cats, one's day is never boring or unexciting. The three cats in this novella and living in one household, each one of them, or all at once, present unique experiences. For one, no one can herd them. They are individualistic, narcissistic and loving when they need and are given attention. This is a story about the introduction pf a third cat into a home already 'complete' with two felines. I never thought it would be easy. Their different behaviors, however, often bring joy when putting their actions into perspective. Watching their 'posturing' as they go through the receipt of love from their owners is priceless. The question becomes: who owns whom when you have a cat, let alone three in the same house. This is a short story written from a cat's point of view with plenty of humor. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have putting it together. Enjoy the Moment!

In this addition to the critically acclaimed Scientist in the Field series, Dorothy Patent follows the scientists trying to put a stop to a gruesome disease before it's too late. Tasmanian devils are dying at an alarming rate from a type of tumor that appears to be contagious. What scientists are learning while researching the Tasmanian devil has potential to affect all animals, and even humans, as they learn more about how to prevent and hopefully eradicate certain genetic diseases. In 1995, a deadly disease began sweeping across the Australian island state of Tasmania, killing every infected Tasmanian devil. The disease moved so fast that some scientists feared the species would be wiped out in the wild within a few decades. Where did this disease, named Devil Facial Tumor Disease, come from? What caused it--a virus, bacteria, or something else? How did it pass from one devil to another? What could be done to fight it? When author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent learned of the race to save the devil from her friend, Australian geneticist Jenny Graves, she felt compelled to travel to Australia to learn firsthand from scientists what they were finding out about these iconic Tasmanian animals and what they were doing to help it from disappearing in the wild. Follow Dorothy as she takes readers on a fascinating journey into the Australian mainland and Tasmania, visiting parks and wildlife refuges and joining geneticist, ecologists, and other researchers as they work tirelessly to save Tasmania's unique icon.
