Excerpt from The Successors of Drake The present work is designed as a sequel to 'Drake and the Tudor Navy, ' to which it practically forms a third and concluding volume, carrying the reader through the period of hostilities with Spain which extended from the death of Drake in 1596 to the conclusion of the war at James I.'s accession. It is a period which, if we except the operations of Essex at Cadiz in 1696, has been much neglected by historians and as much misunderstood. The years in which it is included have been thus summarised by one of the highest and most recent of English authorities. 'Between 1588 and the death of Elizabeth there intervened fifteen years. So long the war lasted, which on the side of England was chiefly a series of plundering expeditions in which the Government scarcely aimed at a single national object, but rather allowed naval adventurers to make reprisals for their exclusion from the New World. It is a peculiar and unique period of English history, in which war is waged, but freely, with a triumphant sense of power, with scarcely any sense of danger, with some lawlessness, yet on the whole with a good conscience and with a national pride which no earlier generation had known. Excerpt from The Family and Heirs of Sir Francis Drake, Vol. 1 of 2 As the story thus newly revealed seemed, from a family point of view, to be worth clearing up, I made some notes about it, to bind in with my copy of Mr. Hervey's book, intending to add thereto a few particulars respecting each successive Lady Drake - her lineage, the amount of her fortune, and any personal details discoverable. It soon appeared, however, that the addenda would be out of proportion to the volume to be illustrated, wherefore, at the suggestion of those most interested in the matter, I abandoned that plan, and began a more comprehensive history of the Drakes of Buckland. Excerpt from The Family and Heirs of Sir Francis Drake, Vol. 2 of 2 AS we pass from the life story Of Sir Francis Drake, the Par liamentarian baronet, to that of his nephew and heir, Francis, only surviving son Of Major Thomas Drake, we feel at first as though we were quitting old friends for the society Of new and less interesting companions. The scene is the same, but we hardly notice it, so disconcerting is the almost complete change of persons who now occupy the foreground. Many who have lately engaged our attention henceforth disappear we may hear of them indirectly sometimes, but their doings have no further bearing on our story. Others, who have been waiting for notice, press forwards for a little while, then they also pass away and make place for an advancing younger generation, different in many ways from the preceding ones, born in more peaceful times - but not, for that reason, less worthy of commemoration in our family history. By degrees, too, as we proceed, and the old order of individuals changes, laws and customs likewise alter, slowly but surely bettering the condition Of people in almost every rank of life. Excerpt from The Age of Drake: "Sea-Dog" Readers Surprise has often been expressed that, with such feeble instruments, they did so much and abuse has often been heaped on their recklessness, their cruelty, their lust for gold. Both the surprise and the abuse are natural, if not justifiable; but both emphasize what is obvious or occasional, while they ignore the spirit of the English sailors at the time, and its wide-spread influence on the nation.
