This paper begins with a brief discussion of the basic ground rules and overall considerations in solid rocket motor design. This discussion includes ballistic design considerations, grain features related to ballistic design and their purposes, primary factors which determine stress and strain levels, and design approaches for avoiding structural weak points. The major section of the paper deals with solid rocket motor propellant grain structural integrity assurance, including materials characterization, structural analysis, and structural capability verification. The topics addressed include viscoelastic material behavior and the requisite thermomechanical characterization testing and analysis approaches; failure criteria and the appropriate testing approaches; experimental structural methods, including in-situ stress and strain measurement technology; and service life considerations.

Mechanics and Chemistry of Solid Propellants is a collection of papers presented at the Fourth Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics, held in Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana on April 19-21, 1965 under the joint sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research and Purdue University. The contributors consider the development and utilization of solid propellants. This book is composed of 22 chapters that cover the many branches of studies that touch upon the science and technology of solid propellants. Some chapters present the mathematical and physical theories underlying the behavior of solid propellants, such as nonlinear and linear theories of viscoelasticity. Other chapters are devoted to advances in solid propellant binder chemistry; combustion and its effects on the structural integrity of the solid propellant grain; and design and other engineering problems. This book will be of value to scientists, engineers, and researchers who are interested in the diverse applications of solid propellants.

Software was developed to provide the means to perform a 'quick-look' preliminary motor structural analysis within the AFRPL. Preliminary structural analysis equations from the JANNAF Structural Integrity Handbook and Galcit 101, 'Fundamental Studies Relating to Systems Analyses of Solid Propellants' were implemented on the HP 9815A programmable calculator as a basis for the software. For analysis of a motor undergoing a thermal transient load, software was written to provide the means to calculate an effective modulus, based on linear viscoelastic theory, for use in the 'quick-look' analysis. Supporting software was also written to provide graphical input of data and to correct any distortions appearing in supplied data. Finally, results from a simple, slow cooldown problem were obtained from a finite element analysis using the TEXGAP 2D computer code to verify the usefulness and accuracy of the 'quick-look' analysis and supporting software.

The report summarizes experience gained on propellant grain instrumentation during 3 years of effort on the AFRPL-sponsored Structural Test Vehicle (STV) Program. The report discusses the types of stress-, strain-, and temperature-measuring transducers available for use in solid propellant grains, methods of calibrating the transducers, installation techniques, and special handling problems. The report is designed for use as a practical 'how to do' guide in the study of propellant grain structural integrity.
