We extract an effective strong coupling constant using low-Q2 data and sum rules. Its behavior is established over the full Q2-range and is compared to calculations based on lattice QCD, Schwinger-Dyson equations and a quark model. Although the connection between all these quantities is not known yet, the results are surprisingly alike. Such a similitude may be related to quark-hadron duality.

We extract an effective strong coupling constant from low Q2 data on the Bjorken sum. Using sum rules, we establish its Q2-behavior over the complete Q2-range. The result is compared to effective coupling constants extracted from different processes and to calculations based on Schwinger-Dyson equations, hadron spectroscopy or lattice QCD. Although the connection between the experimentally extracted effective coupling constant and the calculations is not clear, the results agree surprisingly well.

While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality.

In this paper we discuss effective strong coupling constants. Those are well behaved in the low-$Q^2$ domain, contrarily to $\alpha_s$ from pQCD. We present an extraction of an effective strong coupling constant from Jefferson Lab polarized data at intermediate and low $Q^2$. We also show how these data, together with spin sum rules, allow us to obtain the effective coupling constant over the entire $Q^2$ range. We then discuss the relation between the experimentally extracted coupling constant and theoretical calculations at low $Q^2$. We conclude on the importance of such study for the application of the AdS/CFT correspondence to QCD.

The II International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics was held in Ohio, USA in September 1992. Its purpose is to gather the experts on tau lepton physics to examine the current understanding of the tau lepton physics and to assess future prospects. A particular emphasis of the Workshop was a detailed examination of the '1-prong problem': the discrepancy between the inclusive measurement of one-charged-particle decay branching ratio and the sum of the exclusive decays. The Workshop also stimulated new ideas on tests of the Standard Model using the third generation lepton and assessed the future prospects of the lepton physics.

This completely revised and updated graduate-level textbook is an ideal introduction to gauge theories and their applications to high-energy particle physics, and takes an in-depth look at two new laws of nature--quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak theory. From quantum electrodynamics through unified theories of the interactions among leptons and quarks, Chris Quigg examines the logic and structure behind gauge theories and the experimental underpinnings of today's theories. Quigg emphasizes how we know what we know, and in the era of the Large Hadron Collider, his insightful survey of the standard model and the next great questions for particle physics makes for compelling reading. The brand-new edition shows how the electroweak theory developed in conversation with experiment. Featuring a wide-ranging treatment of electroweak symmetry breaking, the physics of the Higgs boson, and the importance of the 1-TeV scale, the book moves beyond established knowledge and investigates the path toward unified theories of strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. Explicit calculations and diverse exercises allow readers to derive the consequences of these theories. Extensive annotated bibliographies accompany each chapter, amplify points of conceptual or technical interest, introduce further applications, and lead readers to the research literature. Students and seasoned practitioners will profit from the text's current insights, and specialists wishing to understand gauge theories will find the book an ideal reference for self-study. Brand-new edition of a landmark text introducing gauge theories Consistent attention to how we know what we know Explicit calculations develop concepts and engage with experiment Interesting and diverse problems sharpen skills and ideas Extensive annotated bibliographies
