Thomas Murray's The Story of the Irish in Argentina was first published in New York in 1919. During the nineteenth century, nearly 45,000 Irish-born individuals emigrated to Argentina. They were members of medium tenant families from Westmeath, Longford, Offaly, and Wexford (though Dublin, Cork, and Clare were well represented as well). This new edition of The Story of the Irish in Argentina becomes, then, a landmark on the road to recovering the history and contribution of an Irish emigrant community, and a point of departure - together with other more recently published investigations - for the study of a 'forgotten' diaspora.--From publisher description.

Excerpt from The Story of the Irish in Argentina The material from which "The Story of the Irish in Argentina" has been composed was collected, for the most part, from the books, newspapers, magazines and periodicals named in the list given at the end of the book, and almost all of which publications can be consulted in the national and municipal libraries of Buenos Aires. The public libraries in Rosario have also been availed of to some extent. Information picked up in various ways through many years of intimate association with "old-timers," both Argentine and Irish born, has also been utilized pretty freely, while items of personal experience, and pamphlets and books loaned by friends supplied practically all the other matter incorporated. I must here express my very sincere gratitude to these friends and to the officials of the public libraries, to which I had recourse in the pursuit of my undertaking, for their courtesy and willingness to help me in my search. The labor of compiling this book was not undertaken with any other aim than that of doing a very agreeable service to our race, particularly that part of it whose lot has been cast in the Argentine Republic. I have tried to be moderate and truthful in all my criticisms and statements, and if I have in any way failed in this purpose it was not for lack of good will and honest intention. This volume focuses on the creation, structure and evolution of the Irish national system of education. It illustrates how the system was shaped by the religious, social and political realities of nineteenth century Ireland and discusses the effects that the system had upon the Irish nation: namely that it was the chief means by which the country was transformed from one in which illiteracy predominated to one in which most people, even the poorest, could read and write.

Concerned primarily with the formation of political culture, Plotkin (Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, Argentina) explores the mechanisms of political consent (both active and passive) used by the authoritarian regime of Juan Domingo Peron to maintain and extend its power. Peronist political imagery and the institutional framework that supported the creation of the "symbolic apparatus" are examined. Going beyond traditional explanations that have concentrated on Peron's support among the organized working class, Plotkin looks into his mobilization of marginal sectors of the population (non-unionized workers, women, and the poor). Translated from the 1993 Spanish- language work. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
