Excerpt from The Story of the American Hymn The following narrative covers a period Of three centuries, from the coming of the Pilgrim Fathers to these western shores down to our own times. It is scarcely more than a hundred years since hymn-writing in earnest began in America. In early colonial days the Psalms were used ex elusively in religious song, and when hymns were introduced they were nearly all from the pen of Isaac Watts. But American hymnody cannot be understood without reference to the long period of psalmody which preceded it. The one has its roots in the other. Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home This book is a revised edition of the Hymn and Tune Book published by the American Unitarian Associa tion in 1868. The hymns and tunes that could best be spared are replaced by hymns and music, new and old, gathered from the ample resources supplied within the last ten years by composers and compilers of all denominations in England and America. To all whose contributions and labors have helped to enrich this book, our obligations are gratefully acknowledged. While many hymns have been restored to their original text, some slight changes, established by familiar usage, have been accepted without note. Hymns with substantial varia tions from the original are indicated by the sign 1 attached to the author's name. The collection has been made catholic and inclusive for varying moods and experiences, and for manifold phases of thought. Its aim is to present within moderate size, and with appropriate music, the best hymns in the English tongue. Excerpt from America: Our National Hymn Doctor Smith has twice visited the Old World. The first time he spent one year in Europe, and the second more than two years, extending his journey to the Burman empire, and lingering in Madras, Calcutta and Ceylon ln Asia, and in Norway Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, and Spain in Europe. The above stanzas have been given as a natural preface to a slight sketch of Doctor Smith's surroundings in the town where he dwells; for though he speaks in them of the beauties of his whole country, yet it may well be believed that the land scape charms of Newton Centre, as well as forty years of residence there, conspire to make it, for him, the dearest spot in the land. Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.
