Excerpt from The Story of Hawthorne Do you know that delightful book of myths and fairy tales, The Tanglewood Tales a wonder-book for girls and boys? It is all about Pandora's wonderful box, the Gorgons head, the golden touch of King Midas, Jason's marvelous search for the Golden Fleece, the adventures of Hercules in quest of the Golden Apples, and other delightful classical myths which are nobody knows how old. They are told by Eustace Bright, a. young man just home from college, and a very prince of story tellers. His little cousins are never tired of hearing his marvelous tales. "His stories are good to hear at night," said little Cowslip, "because we can dream about them asleep; and good in the morning, too, because then we can dream about them awake." So you see just how truly delightful they were. But there was really no such person as Eustace Bright. He was made by the pen of a very clever writer indeed, Mr. Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was himself the clever student just home from college, and he told stories for his own amusement to a purely imaginary group of cousins, whom he called by such odd names as Primrose, Periwinkle, Sweet Fern, Dandelion, Blue Eye, Clover, Huckleberry, Cowslip, Squash-Blossom, Milkweed, Plantain, and Buttercup. Excerpt from Hawthorne It will be necessary, for several reasons, to give this short sketch the form rather of a critical essay than of a biography. The data for a life of Nathaniel Hawthorne are the reverse of copious, and even if they were abundant they would serve but in a limited measure the purpose of the biographer. Hawthorne's career was probably as tranquil and uneventful a one as ever fell to the lot of a man of letters; it was almost strikingly deficient in incident, in what may be called the dramatic quality. Few men of equal genius and of equal eminence can have led, on the whole, a simpler life. His six volumes of Note-Books illustrate this simplicity; they are a sort of monument to an unagitated fortune. Hawthorne's career had vicissitudes or variations; it was passed, for the most part, in a small and homogeneous society, in a provincial, rural community; it had few perceptible points of contact with what is called the world, with public events, with the manners of his time, even with the life of his neighbours. Its literary incidents are not numerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Twenty-four of the best short stories by one of the early masters of the form, in the definitive collection edited by acclaimed scholar Newton Arvin. Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the greatest American writers of the nineteenth century, and some of his most powerful work was in the form of fable-like tales that make rich use of allegory and symbolism. The dark beauty and moral force of his imagination are evident in such enduring masterpieces as "Young Goodman Brown," in which a young man who believes he has witnessed a satanic initiation can never see his pious neighbors the same way again; “Rappaccini's Daughter," about a lovely young girl who has been raised in isolation among dangerous poisons; and "The Birthmark," in which a scientist obsessed with perfection destroys the flaw that makes his otherwise flawless wife both beautiful and human.

Excerpt from The Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne Oirs and of Elizabeth Manning's account of the boyhood of Hawthorne have placed before the world much that is new and valuable concern ing the earlier portion of Hawthorne's life, of which previous biographers could not very well reap the advantage. I have made thorough researches in regard to Hawthorne's American ancestry, but have been able to find no ground for the statements of Conway and Lathrop, that William Hathorne, their first ancestor on this side of the ocean, was directly con nected with the Quaker persecution. Some other mistakes, like Hawthorne' s supposed con nection with the duel between Cilley and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memoir of Nathaniel Hawthorne: With Stories, Now First Published in This Country The circumstance that I have had access to several American Magazines, hardly of recent date, and to the various American editions of Nathaniel Hawthorne's works, has enabled me to trace out several short stories and sketches of his which, though acknowledged by him, have never been reprinted here or given to English readers. Believing that a certain literary and a very distinct auto biographic value attaches itself to every page that Hawthorne wrote, I devoted my first leisure time to expanding and revising, in the light of this later and more extended search, a short memoir of him, which I had previously written. The results are, for the most part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Snow-Image, and Other Twice-Told Tales W ife, and Mr. Bridge has printed several writ ten to himself by Hawthorne, in his volume Personal Recollections of Nathaniel Hawthorne. As we have seen, Bridge did Hawthorne avery good turn in bringing about the publication of the first series of twice-told T ale: and now when Hawthorne made the last collection he was to make of his short stories and sketches, under the name of The snow-image, and Other twice-told Tales, he dedicated it to his friend, in a letter which is a most agreeable recollection of their college life and of Bridge's faith in him as a writer and of his subsequent aid in finding a publisher for him. This letter, like Greene's to Longfellow, when publishing the life of his grandfather, General Greene, is one of those open confessions of friendship, whicha hints at the deep foundations sometimes laid in the literary life between men Whose pursuits are after all quite divergent.
