The stigmata is the supernatural recreation of the wounds of Christ in Christians. The German spiritual writer Joseph Görres wrote this fantastic book on the subject which is simultaneously a history of the stigmata, a highly developed theory on how the stigmata comes about, and an eyewitness account of the author who saw for himself mystics who had the stigmata. This is a compelling and fascinating explanation of this famous hallmark of Christian mysticism.

The Stigmata is a subject which is most commonly associated with Catholic Christianity- the appearance of seemingly supernatural wounds or marks consistent with the wounds of Jesus on the cross. This work is a mostly non-critical collection of claims of this happening, with a bit of a quasi-rational explanation given as to how such a phenomenon can manifest physically.I have added to this a foreword explaining several basic categories of such claims, including admitting that some appear to be neither fraud nor readily explained by medical science insofar as it is generally understood. A fascinating subject fleshed out by canonical church reporting spanning centuries.

Excerpt from The Stigmata: A History of Various Cases The wonderful grace of the Stigmata was a thing unknown in the Church before the time of S. Francis of Assisi. It is possible there may have been unnoticed cases of partial stigmatization, but there are none on record. When S. Paul says that he bears in his body the marks (stigmata) of the Lord Jesus, he is not supposed to mean that he had impressed on his body the Five Sacred Wounds: but he alludes rather to the chains, stripes, etc., which he had borne for Christ, the marks of which were on his body. The Stigmata, properly so-called, were reserved in God's treasure-house, in a secret casket, till the day S. Francis should come to be adorned with them.
