Excerpt from The Sportsman's British Bird Book The illustrations, which speak for themselves, are absolutely true to nature, having, in the great majority of instances, been photographed under the personal superintendence of Mr. Rowland Ward from specimens mounted at his studios in Piccadilly for this particular purpose. A considerable number of these specimens have been pre sented by Mr. Ward to the Natural History Museum, where they are exhibited in the British Saloon at the end of the Bird Gallery. A novel feature is the omission of the names of authorities and Observers of the facts recorded in this volume, many of whom are unknown to the general public. This is justified by the circum stance that when a statement has once been published it becomes public property. In certain books on the same subject it has been attempted to draw a distinction between birds which can properly be regarded as British and those which cannot lay a claim to such a privilege. Any such distinction is, however, manifestly an impossibility, and all the species are accordingly treated in serial order, although such as are mere stragglers are not accorded insets of their own in the text. The introduction of a certain number of technical terms relating to the plumage, such as wing-coverts, primary and secondary quills, etc., is unavoidable. The meaning of these - as well as of other terms used in scientific ornithology - will, however, be made apparent at a glance by the diagrammatic sketch of the topography of a bird's plumage on page xviii. In future editions, should such be called for, it will be the special aim of both the publisher and author to keep the work up to date. Excerpt from British Birds: Key List Measurements of length are given, but only as an attempt to show the proportionate size of a species. In the writer's Opinion measurements are not of much service, especially as hardly any two persons measure a bird in the same manner. Unless otherwise stated, the sexes are alike in plumage, and the remarks refer to adults in summer plumage. Excerpt from The Ready Guide to British Birds As the result of long experience the author has cc me to the conclusion that there is a need for a guide to British Birds at once more simple and more ready than any yet published. After various experiments the plan adopted in this book was decided upon, viz. First to arrange the descriptions so that in the case of each bird the same characteristics (colour, ight, haunts, &c.) always follow one another in the same order and then to divide the descriptions into vertical columns, so that the Observer can, by looking down any one column, run through the different descriptions of any particular feature until he comes to one which corresponds tty what he has observed. Excerpt from Bird Life in Wild Wales The ensuing pages are not meant to be a scientific or comprehensive work on British Birds, but simply records of observations and sketches made in the course of many rambles amid their haunts. It will be seen that our lines have fallen in fair ground with regard to some of our rarer species notably the Kite, now almost extinct, the Buzzard and Raven, which are both rapidly becoming so, the Crested Grebe, Pied Flycatcher, and others. For such advantageous opportunities we are deeply indebted to that ardent and excellent naturalist and sportsman, Colonel Evan Thomas, as well as to his brother, Mr. E. D. Thomas, and his nephew, Mr. A. Thomas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
