Excerpt from The Spirit Rappings, Mesmerism, Clairvoyance, and Psychometry, or the Life and Times of Old Billy M'connell, the Witch Doctor: The Great Prototype of the Modern Professors of the Imaginative Sciences Billy's habits were rather temperate, though, in accord ance with the custom of the times, he could take a good dram. He was also a great smoker; and smoking, it is known, imparts shrewdness, and adds dignity to human bipeds. The district of country in which Billy located himself, had always been sadly infested with ghosts, and witches, and evil spirits innumerable. People could scarcely leave their houses, after nightfall, without some demon rising up in hideous or fantastic shape, to obstruct their pathway. That there existed a superabundance of witches, was evident, from the amount of mischief done, among men and cattle, by unseen agencies. Excerpt from The Spirit Rappings, Mesmerism, Clairvoyance, Visions, Revelations, Startling Phenomena, and Infidelity of the Rapping Fraternity, Calmly Considered, and Exposed To Jeremiah the Lord appeared, saying, I have loved thee with an everlasting love, &c. (j er. Xxxi. To Ezekiel he revealed himself variously. Daniel saw the Ancient of Days, and one like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. The three worthies in the fiery furnace no doubt saw their divine Associate more clearly than the king himself, who declared him to be like the Son Of God. Other prophets and good men, of whom the Old Testament Scrip tures make honorable mention, had similar manifestations, and spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Coming down to the Christian dispensation, we find numerous ia stances Of the same kind. God manifested himself to Joseph by an angel, and instructed him in regard to the birth of Christ, declaring what Joseph could not have known then to be true, without a revela tion. Simeon had it revealed to him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Never say die! Can the living communicate with the dead? Many believe that spirits are constantly about us and that it is possible, through a variety of means, to speak to them and to have them speak to us. The Spirit Book: The Encyclopedia of Clairvoyance, Channeling, and Spirit Communication looks at these methods of communication, their history, and the personalities involved throughout the past three hundred years of this eternal quest. The fascinating history of Spiritualism is coaxed into the material realm as the object of this perceptive and sweeping overview by that legendary author of the occult and supernatural, Raymond Buckland. Drawing on decades of research, writing, and transcendence, he describes sundry methods of channeling, events associated with Spiritualism, including séances and exorcism, organizations focused on clairvoyance, and a colorful host of mortals—famous and infamous—who delved into Spiritualism. Nostradamus, Helena Blavatsky, and Edgar Cayce receive their due, as well as Joan of Arc, William Blake, Susan B. Anthony, Winston Churchill, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mahatma Gandhi, Harry Houdini, and Mae West (look up and see her sometime). The Spirit Book explores Qabbalah, Sibyls, Fairies, Poltergeists; phenomena such as intuition and karma; objects useful in the attempt to cross the divide, including tarot cards, flower reading, and runes; and related practices such as Shamanism, transfiguration, meditation, and mesmerism. This comprehensive reference also reports on investigations of contemporary manifestations, including electronic voice phenomena and spirit appearances on TV screens, plus channeling, fraud, psychic research, and possession. Containing more than 500 entries and 100 illustrations, this fun, fact-filled tome is richly illustrated. Its helpful bibliography and extensive index add to its usefulness.

Charles Grafton Page (1812-68) was an American electrical experimenter and inventor, physician, patent examiner, patent advocate, and professor of chemistry. He began his career as an astute natural philosopher who developed innovative work with natural phenomena through direct observation and experimenting. Through his work Page developed a deep understanding of electromagnetism which he applied in the service of the US Patent Office in support of other inventors, and in pursuit of his own ill-fated dream of electromagnetic locomotion. His work had a lasting impact on telegraphy and in the practice and politics of patenting scientific innovation. Comfortable himself in public performance as a popular lecturer and singer, and being also a skilled ventriloquist, Page was astute in detecting the misuse of performative acts in defrauding the public. One of the most prevalent fraudulent schemes of the time involved communications with spirits by means of rapping sounds, the motion of a table, or other similar signs in the vicinity of the perpetrator-medium, these sounds and motions being attributed to occult forces and forms of electricity. Page investigated some of these performers in person, and in this book published in 1853 he exposes the various means of deception they employed, including his analysis of the techniques he witnessed during a sitting with the notorious Fox sisters of Rochester, New York. Page's efforts to expose these frauds stemmed in part from his keen concern for furthering public understanding of science and, in common with other scientists throughout history, his strong desire to debunk the unscrupulous applications of pseudoscience upon a willing and gullible public.
