Excerpt from The Spell of Belgium This version has been translated directly from the Flemish, and is believed to be unknown to the world, outside of Antwerp literary circles. I wish to thank Her Excellency, Madame Havenith, wife of the Belgian Minister in the United States, for information, letters and photographs, and Mrs. Abbot L. Dow, whose father, General Sanford, was one of the most popular American Ministers ever in Belgium, as well as Miss Helen North, who lived for many years in that beautiful country. I wish, also, to thank the National Magazine for the use of a portion of the chapter on Motoring in Flanders. My thanks are due to Miss Gilman and Miss Crosby, too, for their kind assistance. Excerpt from The Spell of Flanders: An Outline of the History, Legends and Art of Belgium's Famous Northern Provinces, Being the Story of a Twentieth Century Pilgrimage in a Sixteenth Century Land Just Before the Outbreak of the Great War This book is the record of a vacation tour in the beautiful old Flemish towns of Northern Belgium beginning in May and ending in July of the Summer of 1914. The assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand and his wife at Sarajevo took place while our little party was viewing the mediae'val houses and churches of Ghent and Audenaerde, but in the many discussions of that event to which we lis tened there was no whisper Of the awful fate which the march of events was so soon to bring upon one of the'most charming, peaceful and happy countries in the world. Excerpt from The Belgians at Home There are already many volumes which cover separately and fully all these aspects of the country and its possessions. The present volume deals with Belgium and its people from the point Of view of a rambler who has at various times cycled and travelled many hundreds of miles along its high ways and by-ways, and has sought to learn something of its past history, greatness, and romance, and to see many of its greatest architectural and art treasures in most of its known, and some of its comparatively unknown, towns and villages. It is a record of things seen and impressions gained. An attempt to present within the compass of a single volume of reasonable length the Belgium of the past and of to-day, and something at least of its alluring charm, picturesqueness, and extraordinary interest for the tourist and the student, whether of history, art, or character. Every care has been taken with the spelling of proper names, and to verify dates. But it need not be pointed out to the experienced archaeologist or historian that often these are conflicting. A standard authority has been followed in each case, and the author trusts, therefore, that in this respect there will be very few errors discoverable. Excerpt from Belgium and the Belgians The object of the present work is not that of a guide-book, but rather to convey that information respecting Belgium and its people which we look for in vain in the excellent topographical works of Baedeker, Murray, Grant Allen, Ward & Lock, Lindley, and Jean d'Ardenne. In the chapter on "The Holiday Ground of Belgium" the writer has endeavoured to describe faithfully a tour made by him in the summer of 1899 through the Liege district and the Ardennes. He does not profess to have discovered anything new or strange; but as he has carefully avoided describing any place which he has not recently visited, he believes that his narrative may possibly be of use to those who may wish to undertake a similar excursion. Excerpt from Belgium Old New With wealth pouring in from all quarters, art natur ally followed in the wake of commerce. Nowhere was the cultivation of architecture more general than in Flan ders. Knowledge of the Middle Ages is so imperfect that little can be written with certainty about the men who designed and built the wondrous cathedrals and guild halls; but it is believed that these superb structures owe the1r origin to a great secret masonic league or guild, bound probably by religious vows, with headquarters in France and the Netherlands, and branches elsewhere in Europe. To a branch of this league are attributed the splendid buildings with which the Netherlands adorned the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Chief among these buildings were the cathedrals of Flanders and Brabant (motley). Burgher opulence and energy are grandly and vigorously expressed in the secular buildings of these towns. For example, we have the Hall of the Cloth Makers (destroyed in at Ypres; Town Hall at Bruges, 1284; Council House at Bruges, 1377; Council House at Brussels, 1401 - 5 5; the still more magnificent Town Hall at Louvain, belonging to the second half of the fifteenth century; and that at Oudenarde, built in 1527 - (destroyed in 1915) (lubke's History of Art.
