A spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of down to 2 ppm of cobalt in silicate materials, steels, alloys, and uranium compounds. The cobalt complex with 2-nitroso-1-naphthol is formed, and extracted into toluene, and the colour of the organic phase is measured. The effect of many elements has been studied, and, where interferences existed, the method has been adapted to overcome them. Coefficients of variation of 1.54 and 1.61 per cent were obtained for the 25 micrograms of cobalt level.
