In 1900 there was a general agreement among Southerners on the need for a comprehensive history of the Southern states. It had been and was a nation, sharing beliefs, traditions, and culture. This series, originally published in 1909, is a record of the South's part in the making of the American nation. It portrays the character, the genius, the achievements, and the progress in the life of the Southern people. The purpose of the two final volumes is to round out this historical account by focusing on the Southern men and women who have contributed in a marked degree to the life and development of the South and the nation. Written from a sympathetic point of view, volumes XI and XII constitute a quick reference to these leaders. Limitations of space may have led to the omission of some figures that another collection might have included. No attempt at glorification is made, and accuracy of social and historical setting is a priority. Character, personality, and individuality have always been treasured in the South. Those qualities are celebrated here. Volume XII lists entries for individuals with last names starting with the letters K through Z, including Robert E. Lee, Meriwether Lewis, and Jeb Stuart.
