Excerpt from The Sole Condition of Permanent Peace There is likewise no evident reason to anticipate that states so situated that one can war on another, with hope of advantage in either direction, will ever abstain through great periods of time from doing so. A part of the causes of past wars are certainly dis appearing; but the interests of nations will be able to conflict as long as the nations survive, and it is hard to imagine any complete scheme by which conflicting interests of independent and coordinate states can be kept from occasionally being settled by the test of war. Excerpt from Peace In these days of troubles and anxieties, when the world is suffering from wantsand difficulties, when ambition and avarice are the main features that guide the principles of men, it would be essential that a few words of consolation be. Written to bring men to their senses, and to cause them to desist from the course they have adopted. The real cause of their trouble however, lies not in the world outside, which they think has robbed them of or intruded upon their conveniences of life but it has its origin in their hearts within, 'which unless re moved, cannot bring in peace to them. I am not however, certain how far these instructions will be appreciated by men, and they may pass-off unnoticed aschaff before a raging wind; yet as they are in. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Peace My father has left a volume on Peace. Shortly before his death he corrected the final proofs. It is fitting so, for during his life he preached peace. In his 'Notes of Recent Exposition' in the Expository Times he wrote of the Copenhagen Conference, and quoted these words of Dr. Jowett: 'I was impressed with the grave necessity of demonstrating our will-to-peace as men demonstrated their will-to-war. ... Behind Governments and politicians, behind diplomatists and militarists, there is a great silent world of men and women yearning for peace. Delegates from every land spoke about it.... The people are not numb; they are only dumb. They do not lack heart, they are only in want of a voice. They cannot demonstrate their desires. They cannot speak so as to make Governments hear and heed. They need an organ of expression, and where can they find an organ except in the Church of the Living God? What is the Church for but to be a mouth for the dumb, an instrument to utter the silent yearnings of the purest and the best in every land?' But Dr. Hastings believed that a further duty is laid upon the Church. The people are not all seeking an 'organ of expression, ' for they are not all seeking peace. A fresh moral force to move them to the will-to-peace is needed. He hoped that preachers in all Churches would make Peace a message in the coming winter. Excerpt from Peace and Righteousness Shall rule in judgment. He sees the re demption of self-centered and aggressive individualism: A man shall be as a hid ing - place from the Wind and a covert from the tempest He sees the redemp tion of nature: The wilderness shall become a fruitful field and the desert bloom as the rose. Instead of the thorn there shall come up the fir tree and ih stead oi the briar the myrtle tree. And over all the varied and wonderful vision rests the quietness and confidence of a large and permanent peace. What then is this peace, and whence does it come? He tells us that it is a work, an ehect. It is not the beginning of a process, but its end; not a root, 'but a fruit; not the creation of an imperial fiat, but the matured product of a moral or der. You cannot command peace, you can only grow it. If you would have the reaping there must be the sowing; for the reaping of peace there must [be the planting of righteousness. That is the law of the sequence. Observe the right eons order then can be grown the lilies of peace. Now we begin to appreciate the successions of this great chapter. Thefirst bugle peal proclaims not the advent of peace, but the enthronement of right eousness. The herald withholds the word peace until righteousness is established. A king shall reign in righteousness and princes shall rule in judgment. That is the voice of the first trumpet, and only when certain great redemptions have been wrought, certain perversities cor rected, certain authorities restored, cer tain pure and moral conditions recovered, is the second trumpet heard: And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. That is the expres sion of the divine order as taught in the divine word. You cannot grow peace from unrighteousness, injustice, Oppres sion, cruelty, wrong. Peace does not spring from such roots. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles P Not so. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. That is the sweet and beautiful fellowship. Peace appears and offers her lovely face when wooed by rectitude and justice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Justice of the Peace In my case (i am glad to say) mere uncritical insolence. Initialed guardianship and omniscience have been trivial hardly worth mentioning beside the decent and honourable reviews and critiques written in such a way that their words of praise and of dispraise are both valuable to me. My books have been read. Clearly, by evidence of the things that have been said of them. And I have noticed that these critics who have, most clearly, in reading my books, under stood what I aimed at, were inclined to point out that my weak point seemed to be construction. Reviews that were signed (so that I could have an idea from the critics' names of the scales in which I was weighed), and signed by men I could gain something by listening to, knowing their standards; and reviews, unsigned, that showed (by ia terior evidence) th. The writers were worth heading, have pretty often touched on that point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Price of Peace Men have been wondering why they cannot get rid of war, and why participation in human slaughter has always been identified with respectability and religious duty. So I print the history of: the ancient British priests who personated deity, wrote all scriptures, made war a part of religion, and used kings as their agents for destruction. Excerpt from Conditions of Peace: A Discourse Delivered in the West Church: In Memory of David Kimball Hobart, June 14, 1863 Peace! How few words fall on the ear so sweetly! Peace was the song of angels; peace is the benediction of God; peace is the perfection of the soul; peace is the prospelity of the State; peace is heaven, and peace on earth our daily prayei. All war is by many pro nounced unchristian; but 0161 6 never was a badpeace, cried a good man in hor101 at the woes of conflict now in our land. Military as is the popular resolution, there is among us a peace-party, with one wing of sen timent moving quietly, and another of policy flapping noisily; so that the body revolves without going for ward. Excerpt from The Shoes of Peace I plead for a neglected bit of the Christian armour. The strong helmet, the sharp sword, the ready shield, - even the shining breastplate, - have many wearers. But the quiet shoes are out of date. I think people well-nigh forget that such things are possible. Yet there stands the injunction: "Your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (Eph. vi. 15). While the old and never-revoked promise covers all the roughness, of every road. "Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be" (Deut. xxxiii. 25). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
