Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 5: October, 1897 There is at present a wide spread delusion, not only among the outside world, but also among students themselves, as to the precise function of the College. It is unfortunately the popular conviction that college is primarily a place for acquisi tion, and that it is secondarily a place in which to develop the practical and social sides of one's nature. It is time that the functions of the College were more clearly defined and that these four years were recognized by world and students alike, not chie y as a period of acquisition, not to any great degree as a chance to display our social faculties and business abilities, but as an opportunity to advocate and reconcile, as far as possi ble, those tendencies of the day whose con ict renders living problematical.
