Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 25: October, 1917 For the future, we feel secure. We shall doubtless have our times Of academic fog, or east wind, or even electrical disturb ance, we may perhaps have dull belts Of the humidity incident to our Valley geography; but we are sure, the year around, Of our share Of God's own golden weather, to be enjoyed and used under a leader whom we admired before we knew him, and whom now we love, and under whom we are going to live and study with all our minds and hearts. Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 22: October, 1914 The rules are Obvious enough, very direct and clear, and quite Often forced none too subtly upon our attention. The clang of the ten O'clock bell we cannot evade. And the inflexibility of our social regulations admits Of no question. Rules are and do direct. But Of course we recognize their value and we fall back upon their guidance with a feeling of comfortable security. And we even find them often necessary to us. Witness our eager efforts in behalf Of the permission system, that perfect paradox Of rules, a regulation of exceptions. That we do need rules no one can doubt. But the rules are seldom stimulating they are the results rather than the incitements of experiences and so they teach us to understand the past, and not the future. They must exist as the outline for our sketch of life; most Of us have learned that. But the better half Of our education comes when we learn the value Of exceptions. Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 8: October, 1900-June, 1901 There are two great essentials Of that power Of dealing with life which I defined a little while ago knowledge of self, and knowledge Of human nature. The great value Of the college life, to my mind, is the way in which it forces upon every par ticipant in it some knowledge at least Of these two great reali ties. If, looking back upon her four years' course, the gradu ate can feel that despite her many mistakes and failures and follies, She has laid firm hold on the first Of these two great essentials. The knowledge of self, has come to understand, once for all, her own powers, limitations, and capacities; and has begun to grasp the meaning Of the second, to understand some thing Of the richness and fullness and marvelousness Of human nature, - then she has reason to be profoundly grateful for all the experiences that have forced upon her the knowledge Of these things.
