Excerpt from The Silk Industry of the World at the Opening of the Twentieth Century In this pamphlet it is not deemed necessary to describe what raw silk is, or how it is grown, or what the processes of sericulture and the silk worm are. Numerous publications, both in this country and abroad, give this information very fully, and it seems superfluous to reproduce it. The aim here is to trace the development of the silk industry in the principal countries which manufacture silk fabrics, to describe the processes of manufacture, and to indicate the causes and present conditions of its progress and equipment at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Notwithstanding the antiquity of the silk industry, and the important relation that the principal countries of the world have borne to it from time to time, it is plainly evident that the silk industry of to-day is a modern achievement. The major portion of the pamphlet was originally prepared by the writer as an article for the "Encyclopedia Americana" an entirely new work from the Twentieth Century point of view, now being published in 16 volumes by the Scientific American Compiling Department. It is now reprinted by the Silk Association of America for distribution among its members, with "copyright" permission of the publishers of the "Encyclopedia Americana." Excerpt from The Silk Industry of the United Kingdom: Its Origin and Development It was originally intended that this work should be entitled "The History of the Silk Industry of the United Kingdom," and it was believed that quite a small volume would suffice to contain all the information procurable, but enquiries begun in the early months of the year 1911 have resulted in establishing the fact that the Silk Industry was at one time and in one form or another carried on in a very wide area and at places hitherto unsuspected of having had any connection with it. Seeking, as was natural, in the early days of its development localities which provide water power and a supply of cheap labour, the industry became scattered, and it has remained so ever since. How far this disintegration and consequent lack of cohesion and unity of effort, political, economical, technical and educational, has led to the decline of the industry in this country it is impossible to estimate, but it is undoubtedly a source of weakness, whether judged relatively to the prosperity of silk workers in other countries or to those engaged in the other branches of the textile industry in Great Britain and Ireland. It is not the object of this work to attempt to prove that our past or present fiscal policy has been either the salvation or the ruin of the silk industry in this country. "Red Silk is a history of China’s Yangzi Delta silk industry during the wars, crises, and revolutions of the mid-twentieth century. Based on extensive research in Chinese archives and focused on the 1950s, the book compares two very different groups of silk workers and their experiences in the revolution. Male silk weavers in Shanghai factories enjoyed close ties to the Communist party-state and benefited greatly from socialist policies after 1949. In contrast, workers in silk thread mills, or filatures, were mostly young women who lacked powerful organizations or ties to the revolutionary regime. For many filature workers, working conditions changed little after 1949 and politicized production campaigns added a new burden within the brutal and oppressive factory regime in place since the nineteenth century. Both groups of workers and their employers had to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Their actions—protests, petitions, bribery, tax evasion—compelled the party-state to adjust its policies, producing new challenges. The results, though initially positive for many, were ultimately disastrous. By the end of the 1950s, there was widespread conflict and deprivation among silk workers and, despite its impressive recovery under Communist rule, the industry faced a crisis worse than war and revolution."
