Excerpt from The Signalman and His Work The story of how man has wrested from nature its secrets and applied them for the benefit of the human race is an ever-lengthening-out story of the manner in which man has risen from savagery and barbarism to that state of society which we enjoy today and which we term civilization. We have made progress as we have accumulated knowledge, and when we began the distribution of knowledge we accelerated this progress. The fact that there is a certain amount of information in the world becomes of value only when it is made of utmost use. Undoubtedly this was the underlying thought at the recent Convention of our Brotherhood, and the thought most immediately in our minds was that we as an organization would grow and expand and develop in just such proportion as our individual members added to their fund of knowledge of the art of signaling and its practical application. Eighty years ago Hugh Miller, the Scotch stonemason and quarryman, who became a famous geologist, wrote "The Old Red Sandstone," and in this book he said, "And do not let any class get ahead of you in intelligence." The high standard set by the railroad signalmen is very generally recognized. What we did in our action at the Convention in regard to an educational program was with the idea of increasing the knowledge of signal service. First published in The Atlantic magazine, the following chapters are intended to give the readers an insight into the working habits of a railroad signalman. An occupation mostly extinct today, a railroad signalman plays a crucial part during the heyday of travels with the American rail system, oftentimes being the only factor that stands between a catastrophic accident and a safe voyage. The author shares many of his qualms regarding his industry's practice in handling railway accidents, as can be seen through this excerpt: "The story of one accident is the story of them all. There is a smash-up. Property is destroyed, perhaps passengers are hurt. The superintendent at once starts an investigation. It is practically secret. Not a word in regard to it is allowed to leak out. After a while, a decision is arrived at and a verdict is rendered,—in secret. Then discipline is administered. A private communication containing the verdict and penalty is sent to the accused party. This, of course, he keeps to himself, and the incident is closed."

The Signal-Man Charles Dickens "The Signal-Man" is a story by Charles Dickens. The story begins with the narrator calling "Halloa! Below there!" into a railway cutting. The signalman standing on the railway below does not look up, as the narrator expects, but rather turns about and stares into the railway tunnel that is his responsibility to monitor. The narrator calls down again and asks permission to descend. The signalman seems reluctant. The railway hole is a cold, gloomy and lonely place. The signalman still seems to be in fear of the narrator, who tries to put him at ease. The signalman feels that he has seen the narrator before, but the narrator assures him that this is impossible. Reassured, the signalman welcomes the newcomer into his little cabin and the two men speak of the signalman's work. His labour consists of a dull, monotonous routine, but the signalman feels he deserves nothing better, as he wasted his academic opportunities when he was young. The narrator describes that the signalman seems like a dutiful employee at all times except when he twice looks at his signal bell when it is not ringing. There seems to be something troubling the signal man, but he will not speak of it. Before the narrator leaves, the signal man asks of him not to call for him when he's back on the top of the hill or when he sees him the following day. """""""The Signal-Man"""" is a horror/mystery story by Charles Dickens, first published as part of the Mugby Junction collection in the 1866 Christmas edition of All the Year Round. The railway signal-man of the title tells the narrator of an apparition that has been haunting him. Each spectral appearance precedes a tragic event on the railway on which the signalman works. The signalman's work is at a signal-box in a deep cutting near a tunnel entrance on a lonely stretch of the railway line, and he controls the movements of passing trains. When there is danger, his fellow signalmen alert him by telegraph and alarms. Three times, he receives phantom warnings of danger when his bell rings in a fashion that only he can hear. Each warning is followed by the appearance of the spectre, and then by a terrible accident. The first accident involves a terrible collision between two trains in the tunnel. Dickens may have based this incident on the Clayton Tunnel crash that occurred in 1861, five years before he wrote the story. Readers in 1866 would have been familiar with this major disaster. The second warning involves the mysterious death of a young woman on a passing train. The final warning is a premonition of the signalman's own death"""
