Excerpt from book: CAPTAIX HENRY MOWAT'S ACCOUNT (In the catalogue of a London bookseller, in 1843, appeared for sale a manuscript relating to the services of Capt- Henry Mowat in America. It was disposed of, to whom was unknown. The title was A relation of the services in which Captain Henry Mowat was engaged in America, from 1759 to the end of the American War in 1783. Search was instituted by Maine historians for the manuscript. Judge Joseph Williamson, of Belfast, Maine, advertised abroad, in 1887, I will pay fire pounds for evidence of the existence of the manuscript. On November 2O, 1890, it was received by Hon. James P. Baxter, of Portland, from Edinburgh, and was published in part, with its history, in the Collection of the Maine Historical Society, Series II, Vol. 2, page 345. The original manuscript of fifty-nine pages is now in the possession of that society. The following is the part relating to the occupancy of the Penobscot by the British daring the Revolution; beginning with the middle of page 7 and ending near the bottom of page 21. T'HE Albany at last was called to New York in the beginning of 1779?orders had not long before arrived from Britain for taking post in Penobscot Bay, and Capt. Mowat's experience of the New England Coast being well known to Sir Henry Clinton on former occasions, he was proposed by his Excellency approved by Admiral Gambier as the fittest to command the naval part of the Force.
