This volume's contributors expand the chronology and geography of the black freedom struggle beyond the traditional emphasis on the Jim Crow South and the years between 1954 and 1968. Beginning as far back as the nineteenth century, and analyzing case studies from southern, northern, and border states, the essays in The Seedtime, the Work, and the Harvest incorporate communities and topics not usually linked to the African American civil rights movement. The collection opens with a biographical sketch of Thomas DeSaille Tucker, an educational pioneer who served as the first president of Florida State Normal and Industrial School for Colored Students. It then highlights the work of black women, including Bostonian publisher Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, who defied local governments during the Progressive Era by disseminating medical information and providing access to medical professionals. Next, the collection explores the life and work of Norfolk civil rights attorney James F. Gay, who helped to democratize the political establishment in Virginia’s largest city but became a victim of his own success. The collection then moves to York, Pennsylvania, to examine a 1969 riot that went mostly unnoticed until the town's mayor was charged--more than thirty years later--with the riot-related murder of Lillie Belle Allen. Also featured is an essay examining the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's "Food for Freedom" campaign that aimed to complement voter registration work in Mississippi by providing everyday sustenance to African Americans. Addressing more recent issues, this volume considers the politics of public memory in Baltimore, Maryland, a city divided by racial "riots" in 1968 and in 2015. It then examines the Black Lives Matter movement that gained international attention for its response to Michael Brown's death at the hands of police in Ferguson, Missouri, as well as the Sandra Bland Movement inspired by the arrest of Bland and her subsequent death in the Waller County jail in rural Texas. These chapters connect the activism of today--shaped in so many ways by social media, student activism, and grassroots organization--to a deeply historical, wide-ranging fight for equality.

Originally published in 1956, Seedtime and Harvest focuses on key mystical messages that run through Biblical Scripture, showing how familiar Biblical stories and passages provide insight into the metaphysical principles that form the foundation of physical experience. The tale of Cain and Abel, Jacob’s ladder dream, and many other passages are explored to spark deeper understanding of consciousness and empowerment. Neville intersperses his interpretive insights into scripture with real-life examples of the workings of spiritual law, helping to show how the Bible can provide important guidance to students no longer comfortable with a literal reading and offering insight to those who seek to reconcile their love of the Christian Bible with non-sectarian truths about being and self-hood.

The purpose of this book is to explore in depth the universal principles that govern seedtime and harvest. We will also explore how these principles apply to every area of life. That being said, the harvest and the concepts associated with it, are agricultural principles found throughout Scripture that convey spiritual truth which apply to every area of our lives. In fact, the universal law of seedtime and harvest has been at work in your life for your entire life, whether you knew it or not. It has been operational in every decision or non-decision; every action or reaction; every act of faith or disbelief; every act of obedience or disobedience; every act of righteousness or wickedness. The law of seedtime and harvest has been at work! The sobering truth is this, "the life you currently have is the harvest of every seed you have sown, or have failed to sow!" So, if you want a different life, from this day forward, sow different seeds. If you want a better life, sow better seeds. If you want better finances, sow better financial seeds. If you want better relationships, sow better relational seeds. Spiritually speaking then, the harvest is a season where what God has purposed and destined for your life is fully developed, ripe for the gathering, easily available and within your reach. I am convinced that God has a harvest for you in this very season. Get ready for your harvest!

¿. . . so is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how . . . But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come¿ Mark 4:26,27,29. Seedtime and harvest is God¿s method for bringing forth His Kingdom into our lives. Everything produces after its kind. If you give love, you will reap love. Plant Your Seed. This is something you can do. Jesus said that you are the one planting the seed. God¿s Word is incorruptible seed, and God¿s promises are seeds for harvest. In this book you will learn that as you speak God¿s promises out of your mouth as a seed, it goes into your heart to grow and produce a harvest of blessing.
