Mayre Griffiths, nicknamed Trot, or sometimes Tiny Trot, is a little girl who lives on the coast of southern California. Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg. (Cap'n Bill had been Trot's father's skipper, and Charlie Griffiths had been his mate, before the accident that took the older man's leg.) Trot and Cap'n Bill spend many of their days roaming the beaches near home, or rowing and sailing along the coast. One day, Trot wishes that she could see a mermaid; her wish is overheard, and granted the next day. The mermaids explain to Trot, and the distressed Cap'n Bill, that they are benevolent fairies; when they offer Trot a chance to pay a visit to their land in mermaid form, Trot is enthusiastic, and Bill is too loyal to let her go off without him.

A little way behind them was thehouse, a neat frame cottage painted white and surrounded by huge eucalyptus and pepper trees.Still farther behind that-a quarter of a mile distant but built upon a bend of the coast-was thevillage, overlooking a pretty bay.Cap'n Bill and Trot came often to this tree to sit and watch the ocean below them. The sailorman had one "meat leg" and one "hickory leg," and he often said the wooden one was the best ofthe two. Once Cap'n Bill had commanded and owned the "Anemone," a trading schooner thatplied along the coast; and in those days Charlie Griffiths, who was Trot's father, had been theCaptain's mate. But ever since Cap'n Bill's accident, when he lost his leg, Charlie Griffiths hadbeen the captain of the little schooner while his old master lived peacefully ashore with theGriffiths family.

Nobody, said Cap'n Bill solemnly, "ever sawr a mermaid an' lived to tell the tale." "Why not?" asked Trot, looking earnestly up into the old sailor's face. They were seated on a bench built around a giant acacia tree that grew just at the edge of the bluff. Below them rolled the blue waves of the great Pacific. A little way behind them was the house, a neat frame cottage painted white and surrounded by huge eucalyptus and pepper trees. *This Book is annotated (it contains a detailed biography of the author). *This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors. The Sea Fairies is a children's fantasy novel written by L. Frank Baum, and published in 1911 by the Reilly & Britton Company, the publisher of Baum's series of Oz books. Baum dedicated the book to the otherwise-unknown "Judith of Randolph, Massachusetts" - most likely one of the child readers who corresponded with the author. Mayre, whose nickname is Trot, and Cap'n Bill are turned into mermaids through fairy magic and visit Aquareine, the mermaid queen. While on a tour of the marvels of the deep they are made prisoners of Zog the Terrible, a magician who is part man, beast, serpent, and fish. He is out to destroy them in a contest of magic.
