As my friend has generously waived his rights by permitting me to compose our joint-preface unaided, I may perhaps be pardoned if I leave this unpretending little book to speak for itself, making my present remarks brief as the lightning in the collied night! It will, I hope, be seen that some attempt has been made to make the book in some measure interesting to the general reader; and that the tanks of fish have method in their madness, inasmuch as they are intended to portray the habitat and surroundings of their inmates.
