Excerpt from The Evolution of Man Whoever claims to be an educated man, a man who thinks, must acquire a knowledge of the outline of modern scientific research and of the theories concerning the descent of man. No thought is so essential and sublime as that about ourselves. One may be skeptical as to the value of these things, but before any discussion of them is possible, one must, above all, think. Excerpt from The Evolution of Man: A Popular Scientific Study The main theme of the work is that, in the course of their embryonic development, all animals, including man, pass roughly and rapidly through a series of forms which represents the succession of their ancestors in the past. After a severe and extensive study of embryonic phenomena, Haeckel has drawn up a law (in the ordinary scientific sense) to this effect, and has called it the biogenetic law, or the chief law relating to the evolution (genesis) of life (bios). This law is widely and increasingly accepted by embryologists and zoologists. It is enough to quote a recent' declaration of the great American zoologist, President D. Starr Jordan It is, of course, true that the life-history of the individual is an epitome of the life-history of the race while a distinguished German zoologist (sarasin) has described it as being of the same use to the biologist as spectrum analysis is to the astronomer. Excerpt from The Lowell Lectures on the Ascent of Man The more I think of it, says Ruskin, I find this conclusion more impressed upon me - that the greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and tell what it saw in a plain way. In these pages an attempt is made to tell in a plain way a few of the things which Science is now seeing with regard to the Ascent of Man. Whether these seeings are there at all is another matter. But, even if Visions, every thinking mind, through whatever medium, should look at them. What Science has to say about himself is of transcendent interest to Man, and the practical bearings of this theme are coming to be more vital than any on the field of knowledge. The thread which binds the facts is, it is true, but a hypothesis. As the theory, nevertheless, with which at present all scientific work is being done, it is as sumed in every page that follows. Excerpt from The Making of a Man As the spokesman of Science before the British Association in 1 874 Professor Tyn dall declared that the universe was a mechanism, and that he saw in matter the promise and potency of all forms of life. As the spokesman of Science before the British Association in 1 898 Sir William Crookes declared that the universe was an organism, and that he saw in life the promise and potency of all forms of matter. The celebrated Belfast address was the last influential and authoritative utterance by a leader of the atomistic succession of mechanical thinkers. Not since have the philosophical atoms of Democritus and Epicurus and Lucretius had so conspicuous an opportunity to whirl and dance in imaginative splendor before the eyes of.
