Excerpt from School Gardens for California Schools: A Manual for Teachers Sources of movement in the United States. A study of the develop ment Of this movement shows that the chief promoters are not among the teachers, but among those interested in agricultural and those interested in social questions. The former are trying to make the school serve more practical ends in rural communities, while the latter wish to reach a class of children in the Cities not interested in the regular school work. Development of the school-garden idea has been effected mainly through efforts in these two directions. Both have made substantial contributions to education, as evinced, on the one hand, by the tendency to make the garden part Of the school equipment, and, on the other, by the results actually Obtained in large cities. Excerpt from Gardening as a Means of Correlating Home and School Activities War gardens has, during the last two years, become a famil iar and even intimate term with the masses of our American pe0p1e. Uncle Sam sent out the warning note. Word was passed from family to family that we must not only conserve, but we must produce. Every garden that furnished fresh food for a family made it possible to send other foods, most needed, to our soldiers over there. American women, who in time of peace, indulged in ease and luxury, now took to gardening as a means of doing their bit and gradually others went into it because it became the thing. Many of these will remain in it because they have tasted the joys of gardening and because it has proven its value. War gardens will become permanent as Victory Gardens.' War gardening has given a tremendous impulse to school garden work. For many years leading educators and garden ex perts have realized the value of home and school gardens, but the development has come slowly and nothing but a war could have given it the place that it now occupies. Much has been written and said of its value educationally, but the 'results of the war gardens have furnished arguments in its favor that are funda mental and conclusive. Never before have school gardens been so much in demand and as a part of the school curriculum. The school garden movement owes much to the response of the five million boys and girls to Uncle Sam's call for volunteers in the United States School Garden Army. This united force of boys and girls did much to increase the food production of our nation last year.. At the same time it has shown What a tremendous force organized garden work is for good. Many good home gardens in both city and country. The school garden movement should have for its main object the starting of home gardens by both young and old. Excerpt from Forest Nurseries for Schools In, recent years there has been evident a decided movement toward the introduction of nature study and elementary agriculture into the regular work of the public schools. One of the most popular and interesting features of this movement has been the school garden. The large number Of schools, both rural and city, which have estab lished gardens, and the volume of literature which has been con tributed on this subject, attest the importance and success which the school garden has achieved in the educational world. Hitherto most school gardens have been devoted exclusively to the growing of common garden vegetables and flowering plants, with here and there the introduction of new species as an additional incen tive to interest. One of the chief difficulties encountered has been that most of the plants and vegetables suitable for cultivation and demonstration purposes required by the school work mature or reach their most interesting stages at' a season when the school is ordinarily closed for vacation. Another thing which has tended to make much schqyl-garden work somewhat unsatisfactory is that after the work is o ce done no visible, tangible results are evident, and apparently no lasting good is accomplished other than the instruction given and the knowledge Of plant life which may have been acquired. Excerpt from How to Make School Gardens: A Manual for Teachers and Pupils The first chapters explain something of the development of the school-garden movement and how to make a school garden, while the remaining chapters are lessons in garden work. It is hoped these simple lessons will be of value; but, as every locality is different and the climatic and soil conditions vary, it may be found necessary to vary the directions some, the crops raised, and the size of the gardens, the latter of necessity depending upon the size of the grounds.
