Excerpt from Under the Red Flag, and Other Tales Stars shining in the deep purple of a summer sky; June roses blooming and breathing sweetness on the soft, cool night; leaves whispering; low faint sounds of falling waters from a fountain hidden in the foliage; and across the dim shadowy night the flaring lights and gaudy colours of a painted and gilded temple, in which the band is playing one of Strauss's tenderest waltzes. The melodious strain is drawing to its close. The players attack the coda with crash and hurry, the pace intensifying as they near the end. All the waltzers have fallen out of the ranks, except one couple, and those two waltz as if it were impossible to tire - as if they were the very spirit of dance and melody, creatures of fire and air, motion incarnate. The girl's golden head reclines against her partner's shoulder, but not with an air of weariness; the attitude expresses only repose; the graceful gliding step, the harmonious flowing movements, are as natural as the fall of waters or the waving of forest boughs. The rosy lips are slightly parted, the sweet eyes look starwards with a dreamy gaze. There is far more of spirit than of gross earthliness in the slim willowy form, the fair and radiant face, which the stars and the lamps shine upon alternately, as those revolving figures circle - now in the glare of the orchestra, and then under those solemn worlds of light which are soon to look upon stranger, sadder, darker, crueller sights than this Sunday evening dance at the Closerie des Lilas. I send these notes to you rather than to any other man. Why? First of all, because I know not where you are, so the missive will probably be lost. Doubtless that would be the best thing which could happen, especially for the man who would then be spared reading these pages! But it will also be well for me that these lines should lie--or be lost--in some other place than here. For here in Constantinople they may fall into certain dainty little well-kept hands, which possibly might gracefully wave an order to cut off my head--or some other useful portion of my anatomy to which I have been accustomed since my birth. But if I send these truths hence to the West, they will not be so easily seized by those dangerous little fingers which discover every secret in the capital, whenever they search in earnest. Whether you are living in your house at the foot of the Capitol, or with the Regent at Ravenna, I do not know; but I shall despatch this to Rome, for toward Rome my thoughts fly, seeking Cethegus.

Excerpt from Under the Red Flag: Or the Adventures of Two American Boys in the Days of the Commune The face fascinated the two boys. Will clung tightly to Frank's hand as he gazed up at the strange features carved in the time-blackened stone. He felt like running away, for the face, with its fantastic and mocking smile, its widely-opened eyes, which seemed to express a vague horror in weird contrast to the merry lips, thrilled his heart with fear. Yet he could not take his eyes from it. "See, Will," said Frank, there's another one! Don't they look as if they wanted to eat us?" Excerpt from The Scarlet Wagon To an uneducated eye it would not have appeared to have suffered any material change overnight, but Bob shook his head as he went from wheel to wheel, lifting and turning first one and then another. Finally he drew back and cast a comprehensive eagle glance over the conveyance as a whole, if it could have been called whole in any sense of the word.
