Collectively they are the supporting base for California's second largest agricultural industry - livestock production. This production of meat, milk, and wool is the only method of harvesting the forage wealth produced by these acres from year to year. Grass, using the term in a collective sense, is the most valuable single crop produced in the state. Under the multiple-use concept these uncultivated lands of California have value for watershed development, timber production, livestock grazing, and recreation and wildlife. In different areas one of these uses Will become paramount and the others fall in different places of relative importance. The beef cattle population of California numbers over head and there are about sheep. In addition, about feeder. And slaughter cattle and over sheep are shipped into the state annually to meet consumption requirements. It is in Madera County, 28 miles north of Fresno, California. This h6oo-acre experimental area was established in 193k as a branch station of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station, U. 8. Forest Service. Research aimed at increased production from California foothill range through improved management, fertilization, brush control, and livestock management has been carried out since establishment. The area lies in the annual grass type and is characterized by grassy rolling hills with a sparse covering of trees and occasional dense stands of brush. It is in the lower part of the woodland zone between the treeless valley floor and the higher brush and timber belts. The herbaceous ground cover consists mostly of annual grasses and forbs. In contrast, perennials dominate most western range areas. Ecologically speaking, the area is near the lower limits of the Upper Sonoran Zone. The elevation varies from 700 to 1700 feet, with most of the area lying between 1000 and 1500 feet. Exposures are generally southwesterly. Research projects con-p ducted at the San Joaquin Experimental Range have been and are designed to furnish solutions to these problems. Early range management research at the Experimental Range was directed toward determination of grazing capacity and effects of different intensities and seasons of grazing upon the condition of the range. Erosion and precipitation runoff studies were also conducted during the early years. Nursery and other seeding trials were made with annual and perennial range plants from all over the world. More recently range management re search has centered on range improved by sulfur fertilization. Conversion of brush to grass has been studied. Recommendations have been developed for crushing, burning, and spraying brush to reduce or remove plant competition and allow an increase in de sirable range herbage production. Research involving livestock has been concerned with increasing beef production through larger calf crops, improved nutrition, and reduced losses from poisonous plants, animal diseases, and other factors. This has required many studies throughout the broad field of livestock production. The abundance of wildlife in the area has prompted zo ologists to conduct intensive studies at the Experimental Range. Competition for range forage between rodents and livestock has formed the basis of some work. Various ecological relationships between species of wildlife have formed the basis of other studies. Rice production is affected by changing climate conditions and has the dual role of contributing to global warming through emissions of the greenhouse gas methane. Climate change has been recognized as a major threat to the global environment. Because of insufficient field data, rice-growing countries face a problem when trying to comply with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change stipulations to compile a national inventory of emissions and to explore mitigation options. Given the expected doubling in rice production in Asia, the need to evaluate the interaction between climate change and rice production is critical to forming a sound basis for future directions of technology developments by policy makers, agriculturists, environmentalists, rice producers, and rice consumers. The present book comprises two sections. The first part documents a comprehensive overview of the results achieved from an interregional research effort to quantify methane emission from major rice ecosystems and to identify efficient mitigation options. This research report broadens understanding of the contribution of rice cultivation to methane emissions and clarifies that emissions are relatively low, except in specific rice ecosystems, and that these high emissions could be ameliorated without sacrificing yield. The second section shows results from other projects that investigated the role of rice cultivators in field and laboratory approaches. The findings represent inputs for future modeling approaches in the role of rice cultivators. The expanded database generated by other projects is reflected in modeling efforts.
