Excerpt from The Blattidae of Panama As the total material collected is now much larger than has ever been assembled from one region in tropical America, it has been decided to undertake a complete summary, based on all available material from Panama, in America, with previous records and at present unrepresented species included in the tables on pages 6 to 9, to make the present work complete. The present paper, as a result, is a comprehensive summary of the Blattidae of the Canal Zone and vicinity. The Canal Zone and vicinity, with localities indicated at which material studied in the present paper was taken, is shown in Plate I of the present paper. We would remark that, in the Canal Zone and vicinity, lowland forests, marshes and limited open areas are the only types of country encountered, and that almost all of the material here studied, was taken in such environments. Very similar conditions are found in southern and eastern Costa Rica and in eastern Nic aragua to the north, and probably in northwestern Columbia to the south. Scarcely any work has, however, been done on the Orthoptera in those regions, but this, when accomplished, we feel certain will show a much wider distribution for many of the species here considered, which at present are known from comparatively limited areas on the Isthmus. With over 40,000 described species, spiders have adapted to nearly every terrestrial environment across the globe. Over half of the world’s spider families live within the three contiguous Pacific Coast states—not surprising considering the wide variety of habitats, from mountain meadows and desert dunes to redwood forests and massive urban centers. This beautifully illustrated, accessible guide covers all of the families and many of the genera found along the Pacific Coast, including introduced species and common garden spiders. The author provides readers with tools for identifying many of the region’s spiders to family, and when possible, genus and species. He discusses taxonomy, distribution, and natural history as well as what is known of the habits of the spiders, the characters of families, and references to taxonomic revisions of the pertinent genera. Full-color plates for each family bring to life the incredible diversity of this ancient arachnid order.

Excerpt from On the Nephila Plumipes, or Silk Spider of South Carolina It is but recently that I have had the benefit of an acquaintance with the in vestigations of others upon the economy of the geometrical spiders; and in the entire absence of any American works on this subject, I will refer to the me moirs of Blackwell and other British naturalists published in the Linnman Transactions, Vols. Xvi., xviii., and xxi., in the Zobiogical J ournal, Vols. Iv. And v., in the Transactions of the Entomological Society, Vols. I., ii., and iii.; En tomological Magazine, Vols. Ii. And iii., and Reports of the British Association for 1844 and 1858. The earlier papers are quoted in Kirby and Spence's En tomology, while a brief synopsis of nearly all is contained in the introduction to Part 1. Of Blackwall's Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland, published by the Ray Society in 1861 and 1864. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
