Rob stood by the cross at the spot where the grizzly killed his dad. “Please forgive for what I have to do, Dad,” he moaned. “God only knows how much I’m suffering. I just can’t stand this horrible pain anymore. I’ve got to end it all.” The 44 Colt felt cold and awkward in his hand. The gun barrel glistened from the drizzle. It took every ounce of strength he had to place the end of the barrel against his chest. With his eyes firmly closed, he cocked the 44 with his thumb and tried to squeeze the trigger. His forefinger froze, refusing to pull the trigger. “Damn it anyway! Why won’t my finger pull the trigger?” Rob cried out. Rob made several more attempts, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get his finger to squeeze the trigger. He quickly changed hands, but his left forefinger would not squeeze the trigger either. In disgust, Rob aimed the 44 at the base of the cross and pulled the trigger. The gun fired, blowing a hole in the base of the cross. He stood there in mental anguish. “God Almighty,” he called out, “what a loser you are. You screw up anything you try.” And then it happened. Just as he put the barrel of the gun against his chest for another try, a vision briefly flashed before his eyes. He saw Ada, his old girlfriend, on her knees, tears streaming down her cheeks. He heard her pleading, “Oh dear God, don’t let Rob kill himself!” Will Rob end his life or will Ada’s prayers be answered?

A comprehensive dictionary of sacred and magical gem lore that draws on the rarest source texts of Antiquity and the Middle Ages • Reveals the healing and magical virtues of familiar gemstones, such as amethyst, emerald, and diamond, as well as the lore surrounding exotic stones such as astrios, a stone celebrated by ancient magicians • Examines bezoars (stones formed in animals’ bodies) and “magnets” that attract materials other than metal • Based on ancient Arabic, Greek, Jewish, and European sources, ranging from the observations of Pliny the Elder to extremely rare texts such as the Picatrix and Damigeron’s Virtue of Stones Our ancestors believed stones were home to sacred beings of power, entities that if properly understood and cultivated could provide people protection from ill fortune, envy, and witchcraft; grant invisibility and other magical powers; improve memory; and heal the sick from a wide variety of diseases. These benefits could be obtained by wearing the stone on a ring, bracelet, or pendant; through massage treatments with the stone; or by reducing the gem into a powder and drinking it mixed with water or wine. Drawing from a wealth of ancient Arabic, Greek, Jewish, and European sources--from the observations of Pliny the Elder to extremely rare texts such as the Picatrix and Damigeron’s Virtue of Stones--Claude Lecouteux provides a synthesis of all known lore for more than 800 stones. He includes such common examples as the emerald, which when engraved with the figure of a harpy holding a lamprey in its claws will banish panic and nightmares, and beryl, which when appropriately carved can summon water spirits or win its owner high renown, as well as more exotic stones such as astrios, a stone celebrated by ancient magicians and whose center glows like a star. Lecouteux also examines bezoars--stones formed in animals’ bodies--as well as “magnets” that attract materials other than iron, such as gold, flesh, cotton, or scorpions. This comprehensive dictionary of sacred and magical gem lore, drawn from the rarest sources of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, represents a one-of-a-kind resource for gem enthusiasts and magical practitioners alike.

"Through time, their power will surpass all." This story begins as an evil plague falls upon the Continent; a great war where the Mistaicans and Fedeorians join forces to rage war against the dread Hyuren. The war drags on as many die as the scent of death stains the air mixed with the fowl stench of dried blood. This was why Ryudy, the leader of the Mistaicans, created the Sacred Gems. The gem's light flooded the land in which the battle was being fought. The dead soldiers rose again as their souls were returned to their bodies. After this event in which the Hyuren were defeated, Ryudy cast each gem to a different part of the Continent. Entrusting this knowledge to only one man: Arik of the Fedeorians. Now a new evil threatens to curse the Continent once again. Ryudy now lost in the Shadow of the Dark, his son Ryu now claims the responsibility of once again returning the Continent to a time of peace.
