This report provides an overview of the potential use of wood residues as feedstock for bioenergy production as part of the transition towards a sustainable and circular forest bioeconomy. While data and examples are abundant from developed countries, a specific focus will be put on the role and potential of wood residue-based energy in developing countries. The study is structured around the following four main objectives, each corresponding to a chapter:- define key terms and concepts related to wood residues and bioenergy value chains (Chapter 2);- characterize the status and trends in renewable energy, modern bioenergy and the forest-based bioeconomy and evaluate the theoretical potential of wood residues for energy (Chapter 3);- determine general success factors, common lessons learned and constraints on the utilization of wood residues for energy (Chapter 4); and- formulate recommendations (Chapter 5).The overall aim is to inform new policies and programmes through the identification of optimal conditions whereby the use of wood residues for energy can offer a competitive alternative to other fuels in developing countries and contribute towards reaching the UN SDGs.

Wood residues form Finland's main source of bioenergy. About half of the country's wood production is used for heat and power, either through district heating systems or through combined heat and power (CHP) plants. The most modern of these plants use fluidised bed technology to combust or gasify a wide range of forest residues. This report describes Finland's approach to sustainable solid biomass supply based on forest wood resources. The study - prepared by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd in close co-operation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) - offers insights for other countries on the development of sustainable forest bioenergy. Active management allows carbon storage in forests to grow while more energy is extracted from them. With Finnish forests growing nearly twice as fast as they were in the 1950s, the amount of wood that can be sustainably extracted from them has nearly doubled, the report notes. The other half of Finland's wood production goes mainly to lumber or pulp and paper products, where efficient technologies also help to improve cost-effectiveness and sustainability.

The content extends to the urgency to shape a new multilateralism and reinforce cooperation to achieve global goods, where the environment comes first, to the green finance which will play a fundamental role for the green transition paying particular attention to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.A particular emphasis is given to the so-called 'Dual Circulation Strategy' (DCS) which is presently becoming the priority not only for China but also for the rest of the global community. Due to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic and other external factors, China has substituted GDP growth with the so-called six guarantees (liù bǎo 六保) which represent the six fundamental aspects of the economy and society that according to the central government must receive priority attention, and protection in economic policy to ensure economic recovery. China also introduced the concept of an 'ecological civilization' (shēngtài wénmíng 生态文明) through green, low-carbon economic development. One of the targets is to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, though the rest of the global community and in particular the European Union with its Green Deal, and the US with its renewed climate policies, are pushing to reach this objective in 2050.In order to grant all these developments, 'green finance' plays a fundamental role for the success of this green transition. Therefore, a substantial part of this book explores the many aspects surrounding this theme. Due to renewables playing a very important role in the green transition, the final part of this book explores investment opportunities related to the development of these alternative sources of energy.
