Regions represent a valuable spatial unit for meeting economic, social and environmental challenges. In addition, the sustainable engagement of small and midsized enterprises (SMEs), which mainly takes place in their region, is often neglected in scientific and public discourse. Thus, the relationship between SME engagement, sustainability and regional development represents an exciting field of research. This master thesis aims to identify if and how SMEs can engage for sustainability in their region. The research provides a normative guidance for SMEs explaining how the commitment to sustainable regional development of SMEs should be designed. For this purpose, the theoretical framework of Corporate Regional Responsibility (CRR) is presented and extended. In the empirical part, a qualitative analysis is conducted with six semi-structured scientific interviews and four semi-structured SME interviews. Thus, a structural framework is extended to a CRR checklist, which is evaluated with SMEs of the food processing industry in the Southern Upper Rhine region. Four main findings are formulated in the SME guidance, namely (i) SMEs as networked actors,(ii) strategic engagement of SMEs, (iii) integration of CRR in all business processes, and (iv) responsibility of the entrepreneur.

Industrialisation has brought great benefits to humankind but now, after 200 years of fossil fuel use, land clearance and pollution, the planet’s boundaries are being stretched to their limits.
