Potential Nevada points of entry, shipment routes, and shipping rates for highway shipments of radioactive waste associated with the possible selection of the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada for a high-level waste repository are identified. Routes identified include Interstate Highway 15 from the California and Arizona borders to the intersection with U.S. Highway 95 in Las Vegas. U.S. Highway 95 is a potential route from I-15 to the potential access road to the Yucca Mountain site near Amargosa Valley, Nevada, from the Interstate. The number of shipments to the site are expected to range from 96 to 1380 trucks per year during the operating period of the repository. The identified routes are based on current U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations in the absence of State of Nevada actions to designate alternates. Additional routes are identified that may be beneficial to the Yucca Mountain Project if designated for use under DOT regulations by the State of Nevada. The potential routes and alternates do not represent a Department of Energy selection of routes.

Focused attention by world leaders is needed to address the substantial challenges posed by disposal of spent nuclear fuel from reactors and high-level radioactive waste from processing such fuel. The biggest challenges in achieving safe and secure storage and permanent waste disposal are societal, although technical challenges remain. Disposition of radioactive wastes in a deep geological repository is a sound approach as long as it progresses through a stepwise decision-making process that takes advantage of technical advances, public participation, and international cooperation.
