The objective of the research is to determine the effects of mastery training and length of retention interval on retention of a procedural skill. Armor crewmen were individually trained to boresight and zero the main gun of the M60A1 tank. Crewmen were trained to either of two criteria: one correct performance (standard training) or three consecutive correct performances (mastery training). Crewmen's retention of the task was tested either one or five weeks after training. Each step of the task performance was scored GO or NO GO. When a crewman performed a step incorrectly, the scorer would correct the step before permitting the crewmen to continue. The results indicate a significant effect of both amount of training and length of retention interval on recall of the task, but no interaction between the variables. Crewmen perform better on the retention test after the shorter retention interval or after more intensive training. Differences in performance among the groups are mostly caused by differences on the first retention trial. There is no correlation between ability to perform or retain the task and mental category. The reason for this result may be the lack of variance among crewmen's mental categories.

This report describes the adaptation of a modular, performance based, individually-paced tank crewman skills training program (TCST) for trial implementation in five different tank crew train-up situations: (1) mobilization train-up of active and reserve crewmen in a training center environment, (2) mobilization train-up of training center crews, (3) individual readiness training of armor crewmen preparing for unit gunnery training, (4) accelerated training of tank crew replacements, and (5) accelerated refresher training of experienced crews deprived of regular gunnery training. Two of the five studies produced positive results. In one, the training center active and reserve mobilization train-up, TCST produced trainee skill levels and opinions superior to those resulting from two alternative programs. In the other, the accelerated tank crew replacement training, TCST was used successfully in rapidly preparing non-11E soldiers to fill in as gunners and loaders on a gunnery qualification test--a Table VIII test in which the crews with replacements performed as well as experienced intact crews. Results of the other three trial implementations were inconclusive. A need exists for some kind of TCST to be used in preparing combat ready crews. The TCST program has a number of promising features, but needs further development. Of particular importance is the need for detailed trainer guidance on how to plan, schedule and deliver training.

"The U.S. Army Force 21 program makes extensive use of digital communications technologies to speed the exchange of information among all operational levels. While digital communications offers great potential, anecdotal reports from field trials and testing repeatedly state that the basic procedural skills needed to operate these systems are highly perishable. The present research developed estimates of digital procedural skill retention for the tasks of creating and sending digital map overlays and reports, using the M1A2 Abrams tank Inter-Vehicular Information System. Twenty-eight soldiers received instruction based on the M1A2 New Equipment Training Team lesson plan, followed by an immediate evaluation of task performance, and a follow-on evaluation 30 days later. Results showed a 52 percent reduction in the number of soldiers able to create and send digital map overlays alter the 30 day delay, and a 23 percent reduction in the number able to create and send digital reports. Methods for measuring skill decay are presented, and an approach to identify performance errors is provided."--DTIC.
