Excerpt from The Resistance and Power of Steamships The following chapters originally appeared in the form of occasional articles contributed to The Practical Engineer, chiefly by the first-named author. Almost all the recognised methods of determining the engine power required to propel steamships are discussed in considerable detail, and examples of their application given. The subject of the fouling of ships has also been dealt with fully, because of its important influence on the actual resistance of sea-going ships. We believe that the matter introduced and the mode of treatment adopted will appeal to most marine engineers and shipbuilders, and, in fact, to all who are interested in watching the development of steamships. As former students of the Durham College of Science, Newcastle-on-Tyne, we are glad to acknowledge our indebtedness to the lectures of Professor R. L. Weighton, M.A., whose method of treatment we have sometimes followed. We are also under considerable obligations to Sir W. H. White's "Manual of Naval Architecture," and Mr. D. W. Taylor's "Resistance of Ships," as well as to the classical papers of Froude, Rankine, and others mentioned in the text. Excerpt from Steamships and Their Story In setting out on our present intention to trace the story of the steamship from its first beginnings to the coming of the mammoth, four-funnelled, quadruple-screw, turbine liners of to-day, it is not without importance to bear the above pro position in mind. For though the period occupied by the whole story of the steamer is roughly only about a hundred years, yet these hundred years represent an epoch unequalled in history for wealth of invention, commercial progress, and industrial activity. The extraordinary development during these years, alone, not merely of our own country and colonies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
