Based on comparative historical analyses of Iran, Jordan, and Kuwait, Sean L. Yom examines the foreign interventions, coalitional choices, and state outcomes that made the political regimes of the modern Middle East. A key text for foreign policy scholars, From Resilience to Revolution shows how outside interference can corrupt the most basic choices of governance: who to reward, who to punish, who to compensate, and who to manipulate. As colonial rule dissolved in the 1930s and 1950s, Middle Eastern autocrats constructed new political states to solidify their reigns, with varying results. Why did equally ambitious authoritarians meet such unequal fates? Yom ties the durability of Middle Eastern regimes to their geopolitical origins. At the dawn of the postcolonial era, many autocratic states had little support from their people and struggled to overcome widespread opposition. When foreign powers intervened to bolster these regimes, they unwittingly sabotaged the prospects for long-term stability by discouraging leaders from reaching out to their people and bargaining for mass support—early coalitional decisions that created repressive institutions and planted the seeds for future unrest. Only when they were secluded from larger geopolitical machinations did Middle Eastern regimes come to grips with their weaknesses and build broader coalitions.

Tuesday, November 8, 2016. On this date, in a stunning upset win, Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States. His victory ushered in a new political reality and caused many people, especially those who had been adversely affected by his divisive campaign rhetoric, to experience intense feelings of anguish and distress. In their individual therapy practices, Julie Barthels, who counsels trauma survivors, and Annette McLean, who treats individuals struggling with eating disorders, witnessed increasing levels of anxiety and despair in their clients. In response, Julie and Annette decided to co-author a workbook to assist their clients and others to develop strategies to help them navigate these troubling times. Their book, Resilience Revolution: A Workbook for Staying Sane in an Insane World, originates from a belief that all people have the ability to be resilient. This workbook examines the components of resilience and concludes with exercises that guide the reader in creating their individual plan. Not only is Resilience Revolution a workbook for dealing with these troubling times, it is a handbook for anyone who wishes to learn how to respond with resilience to future challenges.

Whilst much has been written about the identification of resilience in children and their families, comparatively little has been written about what practitioners can do to support those children and families who need the most pressing help. Resilient Therapy explores a new therapeutic methodology designed to help children and young people find ways to keep positive when living amidst persistent disadvantage. Using detailed case material from a range of contexts, the authors illustrate how resilient mechanisms work in complex situations, and how resilient therapy works in real-life situations. In addition to work with families, helping welfare organisations achieve greater resilience is also tackled. This book will be essential reading for practitioners working with children, adolescents and their families who wish to help their clients cope with adversity and promote resilience.
