Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1891, Vol. 38 To say that we opened the book with many misgivings, is to say but little. We had conceived a decided prejudice against the writer. We had gotten the impression that he was a cold and heartless rationalist. A chilly fear stole over os lest we might be doing worse than wasting the time devoted to him. There was reason for this, for as he tells us himself, hints had been thrown out that he was bordering on atheism. One critic had gone so far as to ask him, what would be the title of the book in which he would advocate the doing away with Christ ianity? Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1887, Vol. 34 IT has been thought proper to insert the following addresses in this review, because Dr. Nevin was its first editor. The review was called into existence in the early days of the history of our institutions at Mercersburg. The founding of the first college and seminary was an event of great significance for the Reformed Church. It naturally called forth a great deal of interest throughout the church. These institutions were to be come both the centre and exponent of her life and spirit. It soon began to appear that the church had a life as well as a history of its own which could not be a mere copy of any other church. It was necessary not only to develop a theology that should fitly represent the historical life and faith of the church in whose interest especially these institutions were founded, but also a system of thought or philosophy that would mould the. Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1892, Vol. 39 The Bible is the Book. This title, which it has acquired for itself the world over, implies that it is unique as compared with all other books. It is the book in a preeminent sense. The first construction that might be put upon this title is, that it is the book containing the record of a religion, the Christian re ligion. AS the Vedas contain the religion of the East, or the Koran the religion of Mohammad, so the Bible is the authority for the religion of Christ. Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1884, Vol. 31 After referring to the marked reticence of the New Testament in reference to little children, and quoting an important passage bearing upon the question of their salvation (mark 10 13 the article proceeds to give a succinct historical review of the doctrine held by Augustine and the Roman Church, by the Reformers, but especially by the Calvinistic theologians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Augustine connected salvation mechanically with the sacrament of baptism, and drew the inference that unbaptized infants were lost, though their punishment was of the mildest sort, -the loss of heaven rather than the torment of hell. The doctrine of Augustine became the doctrine of the Roman Catholic church, and has reigned in that communion, without essential modification, to the present time. Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1890, Vol. 37 IN entering upon the science of Ethics, which we may define in most general terms the science of the Good, we pro pose as an Introduction a consideration of humanity, viewed as general and individual. As man is the subject concerned in this science, particularly in reference to his ethical nature, it is highly important, as throwing light upon the whole theme, to have a right conception of what he is in his relation both to the world of nature below him and to the spiritual world above him, to both which he is organically joined, both in his generic and individual life.
