Excerpt from The Red Romance Book Now, in this book, we have made the old romances much shorter, keeping the liveliest parts, in which curious things happen. Some of the tales were first told in Iceland eight hundred years ago, and are mostly true and about real people. Some are from the ancient French romances of the adventures of Charlemagne, and his peers and paladins. Some are from later Italian poems of the same kind. Cupid and Psyche is older, and so is the story of the man who was changed into a donkey. These are from an old Latin romance, written when people were still heathens, most of them. Some are about the Danes in England (of whom you may have heard), but there is not much history in them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Red Romance Book by Andrew Lang I once read a book about a poor little lonely boy in a great house with a large library. This boy was pale, dull, and moping. Nobody knew what was the matter with him. But somebody tracked him into the library and saw him take a huge thick black book, half as tall as himself, out of a bookcase, and sit down and read it. The name of the book was Polexander. So he sat and sobbed over Polexander, because it was so very dull and so very long. There were 800 pages, and he had only read sixty-seven. But some very stupid grown-up person had told him that he must always begin a book at the beginning, and, if he once began, he must read every word of it, and read nothing else till he had finished every word of it. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from The Red Republic: A Romance of the Commune Landes half rose, hesitated a moment, and then sat down again. This seemed to amuse the jaunty man, whose name was Sarre. Certainly, Englishmen are pigs he cried, drag ging Weser into a chair beside him, and Izzy has religious scruples. His voice was perfectly audi ble to every one in the cafe. Several people laughed. Landes threw down his paper, and walked over to the group at the window. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Red Anvil: A Romance of Fifty Years Ago The next time you chance to pass that way make it a point to know Smithboro better. Should it be your good fortune to find the place under a sum mer's sun, say in July or August, gladness will possess your soul that you broke your journey there. A spirit of perfect restfulness pervades its elm-embowered streets. All about where the shad ows of the spreading branches of those majestic trees lie upon the gravelled roads, the flagged path ways, the shingles and the clapboards, are calm and contentment. Calm and contentment are of the air of Smithboro, as if the old village, like a man in the fullness of his years with life's finished work behind him, were keeping vigil there that he might complete a brave career with as brave an end. It is a noble survival awaiting the final stroke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Red Knight: A Romance When people who knew Robert Bryden in his Chelsea days as a quiet, unexpansive creature of slow reactions and an indifferent painter, heard of his adventure in Trinacria they found it difficult to believe that his nature was capable of such an extravagant flight; and in this one can hardly blame them, for the Bryden that they knew had adopted a kind of protective colouring for his enthusiasms that was so typically British as to conceal them altogether, and I don't suppose that one of his friends had any idea of his parentage, apart from a vague notion that he was connected in some way (as he was) with the firm of James Bryden Son, the Wine merchants, in Aldgate. Excerpt from Long Sweetening: A Romance of the Red Woods There, where a primeval forest of giant redwoods stood rooted in the moss and mold of centuries, the day-long twilight was deepening into dusk, and the solemn stillness was broken only by the play of a hidden brook, murmuring and gurgling under cano pies of yew, laurel and fern. Faithfully following its meanderings was an old wood road, so choked with laurel, and hazel, and huckleberry brush that only a slender trail remained to mark its course. Excerpt from The Red Mouse: A Mystery Romance For notwithstanding his very moderate circum stances, the elder Challoner had been that rarest of mortals - a man blissfully content with his lot in life, and, one who seldom missed an opportunity to deplore the insatiable craze of the rich for more riches, forever protesting that blatant commercialism, haste and artificiality were the gods of the present day; and no picture in their gallery of lasting im pressions stood out more vividly than the one in which, surrounded by a group of young fellows, who had got him going, as they phrased it, he was declaim ing against - what was merely his pet hobby in an other form - the egregious folly of poor young men seeking riches through marriage. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
