Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 40: Spring 1966 Where is hampden-sydney in all this? Are we moving with deliberate speed or judicious caution? To the close observer, some signs of moving with the times can be discerned. An unusually well - balanced Freshman with an A record said to the writer a few days ago: What I like about hampden-sydney is that you are encouraged to think for yourself and to contribute to classroom discussion. I also attend a voluntary seminar at the home of one of my teachers where we discuss the issues of today's world quite frankly. A w'eary Senior, checking out of the library with a double armload of economics books, had a more care-worn aspect. I've got two big term papers coming up, he sighed. No Easter vacation in Florida for me. The number of upperclassmen who can talk quite intelligently about the quantum theory, T. S. Eliot and the God is dead cult is really quite surprising. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 40: Fall 1965 Lewis H. Drew, Director of Admissions, reports that size is not the only area in which an increase has been noted, and he predicts that the class should be a good one. Ninety-four freshmen (55 per cent) stood in the top quarter of their high school class, with 64 (37 per cent) in the second quarter. This means 92 per cent of the Class of 1969 came from the top half of their high school classes. Compared with last year' s class with 88 per cent in the top half, an increase of four per cent is noted. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 14: July, 1940 Moreover, while none of us wish to see our soldiers fighting on foreign fields, it is a grievous misconception of the situation to insist that in no event should we send an expeditionary force. As a practical proposition, the farther we can keep the battle from our own shores the better. If it should promote our safety to meet the enemy on foreign soil, we should not hesitate; and to those of our young men who may be called upon to make the supreme sacrifice, it would be a matter of indifference whether they fell fighting on foreign soil or in the fields surrounding their own homes.
