They stir up feelings of fear and fascination, and even people uninterested in snakes pause to hear the often incredible accounts of rattler sightings. Replace that shiver of nervousness with knowledge of these extraordinary creatures-their physical characteristics, habits and habitats, origins and evolution, interaction with humans, and species breakdown. Roughly 4 feet long and capable of swallowing their prey entirely, rattlesnakes represent the pinnacle of reptile development. They deal out death in the blink of an eye. Find out why they shed their skins, the reasons for their various colorations, information about their reproductive cycle, and facts about the rattles themselves. Glorious color photos bring you up close and personal -- as close as you'll ever want to get to a rattlesnake! Gaze at the blue cast over the eyes of certain breeds, the purplish flicking tongue, the venom-ducts and glands, their skin texture, the consumption of a meal, and a snake blending with its environment.

Chris Bell was born on the West Side of Chicago and attended Catholic elementary school on the South Side. He was an unusual and gifted star child who was beyond his mother's understanding. His gang activities kept him out of the regular sequential leap from grade to grade. He joined his first martial arts gang, GGWB (Good Guys Wear Black), just after kindergarten, because he was being bullied everyday by an older kid. He earned his high school diploma by challenging the GED at his mother's behest, after reading books on math, language arts, classics, and Aesop's Fables, which he loved the most, in local libraries day and night, well before his eighteenth birthday, and earned the title "the richest man in the world" by working and fighting in the underground. In his youth, he consolidated the dangerous Black Disciples and Vice Lord gangs of Chicago and all their subdivisions to complete his dream in building another Black Wall Street on the West Side. After he met Madi, Derek Jenkins, and the Stepfather, he moved closer to his dreams. When the Shadow of Knights confiscated sixty tons of drugs and guns off the Chicago streets and placed them on the FBI's doorstep, the ghetto ninjas were a marked group.

This virtual encyclopedia of the rattlesnake became a natural history sensation when it was first published in 1956. The republication of the Second Edition, with a new foreword by Harry W. Greene, will give amateur and professional herpetologists alike reason to rejoice. Volume 1 covers taxonomy, physiology, and behavior; Volume 2 concentrates on the rattlesnake's interactions with other organisms, including humans. Klauber's detailed and thorough study is still one of the most complete rattlesnake references ever published.Greene's Foreword discusses the initial impact and continuing value of Klauber's work and recounts some of the advances in knowledge of rattlesnake biology during the past 25 years. Also included is an update of rattlesnake taxonomy.
