This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1841 edition. Excerpt: ... A TOUR WITHOUT TRAVELLING. The simplest of all tours and the most easily performed, are those in vhich there is no travelling. This may appear rather mysterious to the lover of genuine adventure. I will therefore endeavour to elucidate my assertion. I will suppose, that on a beautiful spring morning, you are gazing complacently through on open window, sipping your coffee, and eating your rolls. The songs of birds, and the odour of flowers, are wafted to you by the soft gales of opening day, and inspire you with a desire to travel. Where shall it be?--To Germany, Switzerland, the South Sea Islands, or wherever you please?--You have two ways of accomplishing your wish. By the first mode, you procure a chaise and post horses; clap youf writing materials into your pocket; embrace your wife, if you have one; jump into the carriage; crack goes the whip, and off you start. This is the most generally approved style of travelling, and there are some old fashioned people, who obstinately persist in thinking, that no one can otherwise be a traveller. We flatter ourselves that we shall be able to conquer this vulgar prejudice, by describing a second method. You begin then by enfolding yourself in your loosest robe de chambre, and gliding into your largest slippers. You then fall quietly into your softest arm chair; and require nothing further to make--for example--the tour of Switzerland, than a well written book, which graphically describes the country. It may happen, that, besides lighting on a spiritedly written tour, you have the good luck to procure for your companion a man in whom you place the utmost confidence, and who will not desert you at the first stage. Having commenced so auspiciously, you follow your friend without fear of being...

Extending the limits of the award-winning Routledge Handbook to Nineteenth-Century Periodicals and Newspapers (2016) and its companion volume (and also award-winning) Researching the Nineteenth-Century Press: Case Studies (2017), Work and the Nineteenth-Century Press: Living Work for Living People advances our knowledge of how our identities have become inextricably defined by work. The collection’s innovative focus on the nineteenth-century British press’s relationship to work illuminates an area whose effects are still evident today but which has been almost totally neglected hitherto. Offering bold new interpretative frameworks and provocative methodologies in media history and literary studies developed by an exciting group of new and established talent, this volume seeks to set a new research agenda for nineteenth-century interdisciplinary studies.
