How do Matthew and Mark and Luke and John fit together? Even serious Bible scholars find this question frustrating and even troubling. This book analyzes the various literary forms found in these four gospels and concludes that the different episodes of the gospels do fit together in a satisfying way. It is an interesting read and an important reference book on this subject.

The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Gospel harmonies were inevitable. One of the first impulses of someone studying a teaching or an event in Jesus' life is to seek as many perspectives on that event as possible. Around AD 160 Tatian compiled a single narrative of the four Gospels, reducing the number of verses from 3,780 (four separate Gospels) to 2,769 verses without excluding any event or teaching from the life of Jesus. This Holman Christian Standard Harmony of the Gospels builds on a tradition of harmonization begun in the 19TH century by John A. Broadus and continued by his protege, A.T. Robertson. The HCSB Harmony contains the full text of the each of the four Gospels in the Holman Christian Standard Bible. The Harmony contains interpretive and clarifying notes by a number of scholars, some with differing views on the relationship between various Gospel accounts. Beyond the Harmony, this volume includes articles designed to address issues that arise when one compares the four Gospels and seeks to give an integrated account of the life and teachings of Jesus. The HCSB Harmony is unique in that it contains eight four-color maps that illuminate the life and ministry of Jesus. This resource will be valuable to pastors, lay Bible teachers, and will serve well as a primary textbook in college and seminary courses on the Gospels and on the Life and Teachings of Jesus. PARALLEL GOSPELS IN HARMONY - with STUDY GUIDE lets you read and study the four Gospels in parallel columns with corresponding passages side-by-side, using the modern language World English Bible. It's also copyright-free, so that anyone can reproduce it. A disciple in the garden of Gethsemane cuts off the ear of the high priestâs servant according to all four Gospels. But only John tells us the servantâs name, and that it was Peter who wielded the sword. And only Luke tells us that Jesus healed the wound. This book allows you to see all of this at a glance.
