Excerpt from Public Speaking For some time the amount of public speaking Offered by colleges and universities has been increasing, and at the same time both the skill of teaching and our knowledge of the field have likewise been developing. New researches have been made; many facts and theories in psychology have been found use ful and by threshing out various problems in conventions and speech publications we have grown in wisdom. This textbook has been prepared in the belief that from these sources it is possible to add considerable new information to those well-tried principles that have been accumulating since the time Of Aris totle. We must also face the fact that a discipline as old as ours is likely to become burdened with much questionable material. By applying the caustic of vigorous skepticism to the dogma of our field, an attempt has been made to keep this presentation sufficiently conservative and essentially sound. Excerpt from Sources of Effectiveness in Public Speaking Psychological Principles Practically, Used in Developing Ability to Speak Mr. Lincoln was struck with the forcefulness Of that intro duction. He felt that he could not do better than to begin his own Speech with the thought which it contained. But when that thought fell from Mr Lincoln's lips, it came in these few most memorable words: Mr. President: If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could better judge What to do, and how to do it. Excerpt from The Psychology of Public Speaking The term psychology has a peculiarly formidable appearance. It is supposed to denote something mysterious and ominous and to be closely related to the "black art" or something of that sort. It is a study in character to note the way different people are affected by reference to the subject. The author of this series of articles spent his youth in a rural community, and attended high school and a normal school in a neighboring city. The inhabitants of the rural district knew that he intended to teach school, but had not kept posted as to what had become of him after he had left the normal school. Some ten years later he returned to his boyhood home and renewed old acquaintances. By this time he had completed his college and university work, received his degree abroad and settled down as an ordinary professor of psychology in an American university. Words can but feebly express the replies which were received from the old acquaintances when they were informed that he was a professor of psychology. Excerpt from The Theory of Public Speaking: An Address Now public speaking is such a vast subject, inasmuch as it may be said to touch upon all knowledge, that it is not my intention to go much into detail, and my remarks shall have reference, more particularly to a set speech - and I trust I shall be able to edify those of you, who have not given the subject much attention.
