At close inspection every galaxy appears to have its own individuality.A galaxy can be warped, lop-sided, doubly-nucleated, boxy or disky, ... in its own specific, peculiar way. Hence, for a complete description, galaxy taxonomy may ask for finer and finer classification schemes. However, for some applications it may be more fruitful to let details aside and focus on some global properties of galaxies. One is then seeking to measure just a few quantities for each galaxy, a minimum set of globalobservables that yet captures some essential aspect of these objects. One very successful example of this approach is offered by the scaling rela tions of galaxies, the subject of the international workshop held at ESO head quarters in Garching on November 19-21, 1996. Discovered in the late 1970's, the Tully-Fisher relation for the spirals and the Faber-Jackson relation, or its more recent version the Fundamental Plane, for ellipticals have now become flourishing fields of astronomical research in their own right, as well as being widely used tools for a broad range of astronomical investigations. The work shop was designed to address three key issues on galaxy scaling relations, i.e., their Origins, Evolution, and Applications in astronomy. The spectacular images of galaxy collisions capture the imagination. This book will show what is out there in the universe, what it’s like in other galaxies, what they might look like, and how cosmic processes might affect life in other solar systems. It will explain crucial stages in the development of physical structure in the universe, and the effect of galaxy scale processes. Professor Struck will explore all the issues surrounding galaxy collisions. He will begin with a brief broad review of the background on galaxies, the history of their discovery, and how this has been driven by steadily improving technology. Chapters 2 gives details of the early stages of different types of galaxy collision - Rings of Fire, Tidal Swings and Retrograde and Sideways Reels - while Chapter 3 describes collisions between galaxies of very different masses: minor merger or dwarf destruction. Chapter 4 covers ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and major mergers and Chapter 5 briefly examines the techniques used for computer simulation results and how increasing computer capacity has affected the development of this field. The following chapter looks at understanding the physical processes of triggered star formation and nuclear activity. Chapters 7-9 look at the broader view of cosmological structure growth which determines the environment and conditions in which galaxy collisions occur. In the densest environments, this process repeats itself on the larger scale of galaxy clusters. The concluding chapter considers what a galaxy collision looks like from a solar system like ours. Although the galaxy is completely restructured and the night sky view would change greatly over the course of several hundred million years, the direct effects on our planet would be few and infrequent, with only a small probability of being truly catastrophic. These issues will be explored along with the ideas that galaxies must reach a certain evolutionary "maturity" before they can even form solar systems, and that there are habitable zones within galaxies. Thus, galaxy scale processes, like collisions, can determine the fate of life on Earth-like planets.

Major galaxy merging is a fundamental aspect of the hierarchical structure-growth scenario of the universe, and it is theoretical expected to contribute to several key aspects of galaxy evolution. As such, empirically identifying major mergers is a key methodological step towards assessing the ``merging -- galaxy evolution'' connection, and close-pair and morphology-based methods are established empirical merger identification techniques. Yet, the merger rate measurements from these methods vary up to a factor of five owing to their unique but analogous systematic biases, especially during the key epoch of galaxy growth (7-11 Gyr ago), highlighting that the merger contribution to galaxy growth remains poorly constrained. As a step towards addressing key open questions pertaining to empirical merger identification methodologies, we carryout comprehensive analysis of close pairs and merging induced tidal features (and in general galactic substructures) using forefront observational data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and realistic mock observations from leading theoretical simulations. We analyze the incidence of major, similar-mass (mass ratio4) close pairs among a large sample of ~9800 massive galaxies (log Mstellar/Msun 10.3) from the HST-CANDELS survey and quantify the major merger rate evolution over 11 Gyr in cosmic history (published in Mantha et al., 2018). Using the mock light cone data from the leading SantaCruz Semi-Analytical Model (SAM), we systematically analyze the impact of different observational effects on the measurement of close-pair frequency and provide detailed statistical corrections to account for them. We also developed a new public software tool to extract and quantify different kinds of faint morphological substructures hosted by massive galaxies in the HST imaging and demonstrated its applicability in extracting tidal features using mock observations of a galaxy merger from a cosmological simulation (published in Mantha et al., 2019). Finally, using supervised and unsupervised deep-learning models, we also investigate the automated characterization of different morphological substructures hosted within the parametric light-profile subtracted residual images of 10,000 massive galaxies from the HST CANDELS survey.
