Silverman sets out to offer a bold new look at some masculinities which deviate from the social norm. This book looks at male film-makers, novelists and literary cinematic characters who position themselves more as women than as men and in so doing surrender male power and privilege.

One of the most central issues for women′s prospects for equality is whether man can and will change. Changing the social relations of gender will involve changing men′s subjectives as well as their daily practices. This book asks whether this is possible. Bob Pease examines how men, who are supportive of feminism, are responding to the feminist challenge, through an exploration of their experiences and dilemmas in trying to live out their feminist commitment and resist hegemonic forms of masculinity. The book is driven by practical as well as theoretical concerns, and aims to develop strategies that will promote the process of change towards equality in gender relations. Drawing on a critical postmodern theoretical framework, Pease argues that it is possible for men to reposition themselves in patriarchal discourses and to reformulate their interests in challenging gender domination. Recreating Men is an invaluable reading for academics and students of gender studies, and of interest to students of sociology, psychology and political sociology.

Exploring the similarities and differences between and across masculinities in the Middle East and the West, Postcolonial Masculinities avoids the constant reinforcement of divisions and stereotypes created by the process of 'othering' and the problematic discourse of the clash of civilisations, examining instead how subjectivities in Western and Arab societies are intertwined, operating through envy of the other and the desire to be at once the same and yet fundamentally separate. With a focus on England and Egypt, this book reveals the manner in which masculinities are shaped in and through a history of colonialism and postcolonialism, irrespective of colour, ethnicity, religion, class, sexuality, or the wishes of the individual. By concentrating on the shared ground of postcolonial, masculine subjectivities, Postcolonial Masculinities looks beyond the dissonance often iterated between the apparently rational Western man and the apparently oppressive, patriarchal Middle Eastern man. Shedding light on the shared and distinctive aspects of masculinities across the Middle East and the West, whilst illuminating the influences upon them, this book will appeal to social scientists with interests in cultural studies, masculinities, psychoanalytic theory, gender and sexuality, and colonialism and postcolonialism.

Based on post-structuralism's theories regarding gender, my dissertation examines how three contemporary southern American authors, Pat Conroy, Larry Brown, and Barry Hannah, construct their respective ideas of masculinities. Focusing on the transitory nature of masculinity, this paper discusses how these male authors, living in a time, according to some commentators, of "masculine crisis," address the intrinsic subjectivity of maleness. Conroy's first novel The Great Santini, via Ben Meechum's coming-of-age narrative, examines masculine models that the high schooler encounters in South Carolina. As my analysis reveals, Ben eventually rejects his father's male subjectivity, an overtly violent masculine performance, in favor of a "gentler" masculinity, suggesting that Conroy himself privileges this softer masculine subjectivity. But in The Prince of Tides, Conroy demonstrates that a "sensitive" male living in the American south, like protagonist Tom Wingo, often suffers from psychological anxiety. Only when Tom "mans up," ironically at the behest of a radical feminist therapist, is he able regain mental and emotional stability.
