Excerpt from The Problem of the Pacific The author of The Problem of the Pacific, a real son of the great ocean, has in this volume so thoroughly sifted what has been written in recent years on the political aspects of it that the present writer would have declined from paucity, of knowledge to respond to the request to write a foreword to this very useful book had it not been that he has spent twenty-eight years of his life in the Pacific, and couse quently is deeply interested in that part of the world, where he has many thousands of friends of different races to whose welfare he can never be indifferent. Excerpt from The Problem of the Pacific in the Twentieth Century The object of this book is to disclose to the reader the essence of the problem of the Pacific. In no other sphere of human activities are people as prone to nourish ihusions as in the domain of phenomena affecting the common wealth as a whole. To nourish such illusions is, however, as dangerous an error as to approach a precipice blindfolded. For this reason the author has aimed chiefly at restricting himself to the realm of realities in dealing with the problem of the Pacific. One of these realities is the necessity of all international agreements being backed by actual force. We may deplore this fact the more bitterly that 'mankind has but recently suffered such heavy losses in blood and treasure but such is the present condition of the world, and it must be taken into account, more especially in a treatise, for such is the primary principal of positive science in search of the truth. The realities of so vast a problem as that of the Pacific can only be understood if the investigator embraces the entire field of social, economic, political and military conditions appertaining to the problem. The view hasrecently become prevalent that he who speaks of military power is a militarist. This, how ever, is as great a fallacy as the reverse assertion that he who talks of nothing but peace is a pacifist. Truth, even bitter truth, is better than the most high-minded fallacy. Excerpt from The Past, the Present and the Future of the Pacific The Parent Government has been, unfortunately, too Oppressive towards us in its laws and policy, to enable many of us to boast of possessing much of this world's wealth. We have been made, ever since we resided on these Pacific shores, mere hewers of wood and drawers of water to the Government at Washington and our brethren on the Atlantic side of the continent. They have been our Oppressive taskmasters ever since we resided here, and we have served them most faithfully, and we shall never get free from their tyranny and oppression, until we take measures to de fine our position and defend ourselves. This is strong talk, but we mean all we say. Let not the United States Government forget the lesson our ancestors taught Great Britain, when she, in the pride of her power, forced them to define their position and to defend themselves. The result of that contest is now a matter of history, and we are all familiar with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pacific Triangle The plan of the book has been to give the historical approach to the Pacific and its native races; then to take the reader upon a journey of over twenty thousand miles around the Pacific. I hope that he will come away with a clear impression of the immensity of the Ocean, of the diversity of its natural and human elements, and the splendor and picturesqueness of its make-up. Out of this review certain problems emerge, the problems of the relations of native and alien races, of marriages and divorces, of markets and ideals - problems that affect the primitive races in their own new place in the world. But over and above and about these come the issues that involve the more advanced races of Asia, Australasia, and America - where they impinge upon each other and where their interests in these minor races center. This is the logic of the Pacific. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Conflict of European Nations in the Pacific The completion Of the panama-pacific Canal opens the fourth chapter in the history Of the Pacific Ocean. Since the Asiatic and American peoples seem to have had no regular intercourse across the Ocean, even if occasional fishermen may have been blown from shore to shore by the winds, the first chapter opened with the coming Of Europeans almost simultaneously to gaze upon the Pacific Ocean from both east and west, at the beginning Of the sixteenth century. For about two hundred years the Ocean re mained a Spanish lake, disturbed only by the intervention Of ad ven turers, explorers, and pirates Of other nations. Then came the second chapter, the chapter Of con ict between the nations Of Europe, which closed when the spanish-american countries, the United States Of America, and the Dominion of Canada occupied the American coast-line Of the Ocean. The third chapter covers the greater part Of the nineteenth century, during which Europe made spasmodic efforts among the islands and in China to secure a foot hold, and the power Of New Japan arose. This epoch now ends. The completion of the Panama Canal has brought Europe into closer touch with the Pacific Ocean; the Old isolation of the American coast Of the Pacific has come to an end; and new problems have arisen for merchants and politicians alike.
