Excerpt from Elements of Glass and Glass Making It has been the object to present the contents of this volume in a series of plain, practical essays, arranged In succession, as it appears to the writer, that to properly understand the aggregation, and proportionate association, of the elements of glass, it is necessary to first understand its principles and characteristics. It IS for this reason that so much Space has been devoted to the more important characteristics of glass, as the principles of definite propor tion are dependent thereon. The various constituents of glass have also been given considerable space to afford a proper conception of their derivation, composition and effects, including simple tests and analyses for determining purity. An appendix has also been added, which contains miscellaneous information pertaining to the subject. All known works of authority have been consulted the preparation of this manuscript. Especial indebtedness is due to Mr. James Reed, who so generously contributed a large portion of the recipes contained In the work. In con elusion, the work IS designed for the practical glassmaker; and the author presents elements OF glass and glass making for his consideration, with the hope that, in some respect, it may contribute to the general fund of knowledge in glassmaking. Excerpt from Glass Manufacture The present volume on Glass Manufacture has been written chiefly for the benefit of those who are users of glass, and therefore, makes no claim to be an adequate guide or help to those engaged in glass manufacture itself. For this reason the account of manufacturing processes has been kept as non-technical as possible; no detailed drawings of plant or appliances have been given, and only a few illustrative diagrams have been introduced for the purpose of avoid ing lengthy verbal descriptions. In describing each process the object in view has been to give an insight into the rationale of each step, so far as it is known or understood, and thus to indicate the possibilities and limitations of the process and of its resulting pro ducts rather than to provide a detailed guide to the technique of the various Operations. The practical aim of the book has further been safeguarded by the fact that the processes described in these pages are, with the exception of those described as obsolete to the author's definite knowledge, in commercial use at the present time. For this reason many apparently ingenious and beautiful processes described in earlier books on glass have not been mentioned here, since the author could find no trace of their employment beyond the records of the various patents involved. On the other hand the reader must be warned to bear in mind that the peculiar conditions of the glass manufacturing industry have led to the practice on the part of manufacturers of keeping their processes as secret as possible, so that the task of the author who would give an accurate account of the best modern processes used in any given department of the industry is beset with great difficulties. The author has endeavoured. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Fifty Years of Glass Making, 1869-1919 The constantly increasing use of glass has made it in dispensable in our domestic, scientific and industrial lives. In this book we shall attempt to trace briefly its develop ment from known antiquity to present-day modern practice. The last fifty years have seen the greatest development in glass manufacture since its discovery. Processes have been marvelously improved. Intricate machinery has supplanted the slower, less accurate hand methods. Laboratories have eliminated to a great extent the element of chance, which, in earlier days, and even in this more enlightened period, has worked much havoc. There are innumerable examples of glass, both in public and private collections, which are unquestionably of ancient origin, yet because of the lack of proper inscriptions it is impossible to classify them in chrono logical order. Excerpt from A Handbook of Laboratory Glass-Blowing Introduction and Preliminary Remarks - General Principles to be observed in Glass Working - Choice of apparatus-tools and Appliances - Glass. Glass-blowing is neither very easy nor very difficult there are operations so easy that the youngest laboratory boy should be able to repeat them successfully after once having been shown the way, there are operations so difficult that years are needed to train eye and hand and judgment to carry them out; but the greater number of scientific needs lie be tween these two extremes. Yet a surprisingly large number of scientific workers fail even to join a glass tube or make a T piece that will not crack spontaneously, and the fault is rather one of understanding than of lack of ability to carry out the necessary manipulation. Excerpt from Glass and Glass Manufacture Who is not acquainted with glassware in some form or other? From the early days of the Ancient Egyptians the art of glassmaking was known, and it is now one of our most important industries, supplying as it does many articles for our common domestic use and convenience. Glass windows have introduced comfort and convenience into every home; for by their means light is admitted into our dwellings without the wind, rain and cold, and we enjoy the blessings of the one without the inconveniences of the others. The purposes for which glass can be used are manifold; and in domestic articles it contributes largely to our cleanliness and health. In the use of spectacles, table glass, mirrors, bottles, and many other goods our dependence upon glass becomes very evident. The degree of proficiency attained in the manufacture of glass is still more remarkable when we consider the various kinds of glassware used in physical, chemical, astronomic, medical, and other scientific investigations. Many of the wonderful results of the present times would not have been attained without the aid of glass in supplying the needs of our scientific investigators. Before August, 1914, few people realised the important part glass occupies in the production of war munitions. The importance of optical glasses for telescopes, gun sights, and microscopes is well known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Glass-Making The articles upon the history and progress of Glass Manufacture herein presented to the public were originally published in the columns of a village newspaper. They are the result of investigation upon these topics made in the few leisure moments gained from the engrossing cares of business, and consequently make no pretension to anything of literary character or execution. The object of the writer has been to gather, in a condensed form, whatever of interesting information could be gained from authentic sources, in regard to a branch of manufacture which has attained a position among the useful and elegant arts scarcely rivalled by any other of those which mark and distinguish the progressive character of our country.
