Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation The principles set forth in this book, the queries answered, I have so often talked over with the assistants who, at Harvard and Wellesley, have aided me in my work, that I feel the results here given are as much theirs as mine. I owe so much in the past, also, to their enthu siasm and their intelligent devotion to their work, that I cannot refrain from recognizing my indebtedness. For valuable suggestions while this book has been going through the press and for reading of the proofs I wish in particular to thank assistant-professor S. C. Hart of Wellesley College, and Mr. F. G. Caffey, of Montgomery, Alabama. For the classification of definitions used on pp. 54 - 59 I am indebted to Professor Genung in his Practical Elcmmts of R/zetorz'c. Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation: Revised and Augmented The study of argumentation has increased so rapidly in schools and colleges during the ten years since the first edition of this book was published that it is no longer necessary to justify the educational importance of the subject. Nor is it necessary now to explain in detail the kind of argumentation taught in this book. For these reasons a large amount of justificatory and explanatory material which filled the early pages of the first edition has been removed. On the other hand, in the ten years since the Principles of Argumentation appeared, it has become steadily clearer that the principles of analysis needed restating for greater accuracy and simplicity; that the difficult subject of evidence, especially refutation, should be given fuller treatment; that the material in the chapter on brief-drawing could be simplified and clarified by rearrangement and a different emphasis; that persuasion needed much more detailed exposition; and that, perhaps the most marked need of all, the importance of rhetoric in argumentation should be given insistent emphasis. Excerpt from Principles of Argument and Debate Hence the proposition, Resolved, That unemployment is not the result of large-scale industry, is incorrectly phrased, because it requires the affirmative to deny the positive contentions of the neg ative. To cast this sentence into proper form, the not should be Omitted. The following proposition contains the same fault in a less Obvious form: Resolved, That the present neutrality act is satisfactory. Here the affirmative would be defending the status quo instead of recommending a change. The proposition Should be recast and limited, possibly in this form: Resolved, That the present neutrality act Should be amended to include the former embargo provisions. Excerpt from A Course in Argumentative Writing This book arises out of certain beliefs concerning the study of argumentation, which, though perhaps not wholly novel, have as yet found no recognition in the lit erature of the subject. The first of these beliefs is that the principles of argumentation should be derived by the student from its practice before the practice is made to conform to the principles. In short - one may as well acknowledge it - a firm faith in the so-called inductive method as applied to argumentation lies at the root of this treatise. Such a faith implies, of course, that the student should be asked to dissect out logical formulae for himself from his own unconscious reasonings, using them, when discovered, to render those reasonings more exact. The construction and the rough analysis of arguments would, similarly, precede the formulation of any princi ples of persuasion. Excerpt from The Principles of Rhetoric By supplying deficiencies that time has disclosed. Making rough places smooth, and adapting the treatment of each topic to present needs, I have tried to make the book more serviceable to advanced students of English Composition. From Book I. Of Part I. Some elementary matters have been omitted, but so much material has been added that the total number of pages is increased; in Book II. Of Part I. The old material has been re arranged and new material has been introduced. In Part II. Still greater changes have been made: Description and Narration, which were originally treated together. Are now treated in separate chapters and with greater fulness; the chapters on Argument have been thrown into one and entirely rewritten; and a chapter on Exposition has been added.
