For, first Of all, we regard this method as unscientific. Too much room is left for the play Of mere apriorisms. We cannot See how wholly just results are possible by it. Certainly they will have none Of the stringency or claim to universal acceptance that attaches to strictly logical reasoning. Does not Kuenen himself in substance acknowledge this when he says that the historical image which we frame by it is to no small extent, the result Of our own personality, and that here, where the documents cannot possibly be taken as they stand, the influence Of one's personal peculiarities reaches its maximum It is true, if certain critics are agreed upon a theory and proceed to adjust the record to it, every fact being made to fit into its place in the assumed historic connection, that a general consensus concerning it among these critics may no doubt be achieved. But the proba bility Of its being upset by the starting Of another theory is always imminent. Nothing is more common than a change in one's his torical or philosophical standpoint. That is all that would he need ful. It would be otherwise were the basis Of agreement Objective like the credibility Of a narrative. Excerpt from The Presbyterian and Reformed Review, Vol. 6: July, 1895 Approaching now the question of his theology, we may ask the question which it is well to apply to all preachers and all thinkers of all schools, Christ's own question concerning Himself, What think ye of Christ? It is wonderfully true of Bishop Brooks that his whole preaching was a prolonged and glowing tribute of praise, and honor, and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. It is said that he once answered, being asked what sermon he would preach, I only have one sermon. He might have adopted in his own way the exclamation of Count Zinzendorf, I have but one passion; it is He. His whole thinking continually revolves about His Per son, in reverent delight over His humanity and His divinity, glory ing in His life and death, and appealing to all men to believe and obey Him. While we must rejoice in this and in the saving power that therefore followed his ministry, the moment we press further into his doctrine concerning our Lord's Person, the more surprising, and, to our view, the more deplorable, is his evident departure from the theology of the Episcopal Church, as from the view of the im mense majority of Christians in all ages. His doctrine of the Per son of Christ - ever the key to any man's whole idea of the Gos pel - colors, and, as we think, greatly lowers his ideas both of the man Christ Jesus, of God Himself, of humanity, redeemed and un redeemed, altering with it the work of Christ for our salvation. His view of Christ is expressed with great clearness in a sermon with the significant title of, The Eternal Humanity, on the text. Sees ask Christ whether it is lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause, He answers them: Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said for this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh (matt. Xix. 4, Again As the days of Noe were so shall the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days of Noe that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not till the flood came and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (matt. Xxiv. Again: And thou Capernaum which art exalted unto heaven shalt be brought down unto hell; for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee (matt. Xi. These utterances, every one feels, lose their weight and solemnity if there was no flood such as is described in Genesis, and if the destruction of wicked Sodom may be only a myth. Illustrations and parallels may, for certain purposes, be adduced from fictitious literature, but when the Lord would awaken the conscience of men and alarm their fears, by reference to the. Certainty of divine judgment, He will not confirm His teaching by instances of punishment which are only fabulous. His argument that the Holy and Just God will do as He has done - will make bare His arm as in the days of old is robbed, in this case, of all its validity.
