Download The Prairie Mother (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Prairie Mother I opened my eyes and saw a pea-green world all around me. Then I heard the doctor say: "Give 'er another whiff or two." His voice sounded far-away, as though he were speaking through the Simplon Tunnel, and not merely through his teeth, within twelve inches of my nose. I took my whiff or two. I gulped at that chloroform like a thirsty Bedouin at a wadi-spring. I went down into the pea-green emptiness again, and forgot about the Kelly pad and the recurring waves of pain that came bigger and bigger and tried to sweep through my racked old body like breakers through the ribs of a stranded schooner. I forgot about the hateful metallic clink of steel things against an instrument-tray, and about the loganberry pimple on the nose of the red-headed surgical nurse who'd been sent into the labor room to help. I went wafting off into a feather-pillowy pit of infinitude. I even forgot to preach to myself, as I'd been doing for the last month or two. I knew that my time was upon me, as the Good Book says. Excerpt from Prairie Stories: Containing the Prairie Wife; The Prairie Mother; The Prairie Child Splash! That's me, Matilda Anne! That's me falling plump into the pool of matrimony before I've had time to fall in love! And oh, Matilda Anne, Matilda Anne, I've got to talk to you! You may be six thousand-miles away, but still you've got to be my safety-valve. I'd blow up and explode if I didn't express myself to some one. For it's so lonesome out here I could go and commune with the gophers. This isn't a twenty-part letter, my dear, and it isn't a diary. It's the coral ring I'm cutting my teeth of desolation on. For, every so long, I've simply got to sit down and talk to some one, or I'd go mad, clean, stark, staring mad, and bite the tops off the sweet-grass! It may even hap-a pen this will never be sent to you. But I like to think of you reading it, some day, page by page. Download Songs of the Prairie (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Songs of the Prairie The Prairie The City? Oh, yes, the City Is a good enough place for a while, It fawns on the clever and witty, And welcomes the rich with a smile; It lavishes money as water, It boasts of its palace and hall, But the City is only the daughter - The Prairie is mother of all! The City is all artificial, Its life is a fashion-made fraud, Its wisdom, though learned and judicial, Is far from the wisdom of God; Its hope is the hope of ambition, Its lust is the lust to acquire, And the larger it grows, its condition Sinks lower in pestilent mire. The City is cramped and congested, The haunt and the covert of crime; The Prairie is broad, unmolested, It points to the high and sublime; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download A Voice of the Prairie Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from A Voice of the Prairie: Poems and Prose The purpose of this Preface, like many others, may be said to attempt to excuse the inexcusable. Be that as it may, if there are a number of readers of this book who have had, in their solitary hours, thoughts of a kindred theme, these may suggest new ones. If only one - if no more be possible can - find a line of sympathy with his feelings, the author is repaid. Download A Prairie Courtship (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from A Prairie Courtship She faced it with a certain courage, however, for her defects were the results of her upbringing and not inherent in her nature, and she forthwith sought a remedy. In spite of her mother's protests, her sister's husband was induced to send her for a few months' training to a business school, and when she left the latter there followed a three-years' experience which was in some respects as painful as it was varied. Her handwriting did not please the crabbed scientist who first engaged her as amanuensis. Her second employer favored her with personal compliments which were worse to bear than his predecessor's sarcastic cen sure; and She had afterward drifted from occupation to occupation, sinking on each occasion a little lower in the social scale. In the meanwhile her prosperous sister's manner became steadily chillier; her few influential friends appeared desirous of forgetting her; and at last she formed the desperate resolution of going out to Canada. Nobody, however, objected to this, and her brother-in-law, who was engaged in commerce, sent her a very small check with significant readiness, and by some means secured her a position as typist and stenographer in the service of a business firm in Winnipeg.
