The bustling Port of Savannah, Georgia, sixteen miles up the Savannah River from the Atlantic, provides a uniquely panoramic view of shipping and industry along the riverfront. Huge container ships pass within a hundred yards of the city's historic port area with its restaurants and shops as they head upriver to the modern port facilities. Photographing the wide variety of ships passing through the city provides a dynamic visual experience, but the real adventure is photographing from a boat on the river. The focus of this ongoing project is continually changing, much like the Port of Savannah itself. This study is not a complete documentation of the port area, but rather what has caught my interest or was accessible at the time.

The project I am currently working on is a photo study of the Port of Savannah and the commercial water traffic on the Savannah River. This includes the huge container ships as well as the humble shrimp boats that share this waterway. I took a few photographs many years ago, but in 2009 I started seriously looking at the river as a photographic subject. This was shortly after I started to spend most of my time at our condo on Hilton Head Island, just a short drive from Savannah and even a shorter distance to the Savannah River by boat.I'm hoping to turn this photo study into a high-quality coffee table-type book. So in preparation for that I'm creating a series of workbooks in order to share my experiences and the process of getting to a certain point in the Port's timeline--it is a dynamic place, and change is in its DNA.I do hope you will enjoy this journey. Welcome aboard!

When I started this project to photographically document the Port of Savannah and the commercial water traffic on the Savannah River, I intended to complete a series of four workbooks over the course of a couple of years. These would then be compiled into a final study that told the story of the port and the river. The final study would contain photos from each of the four workbooks, along with additional material and photographs. The first workbook was completed and printed over two years ago, and in it I outlined what I hoped to cover in the second workbook. I started my rides on tugboats and a push boat in 2017. These were grand adventures, and I planned to finish this work in 2020. Then the pandemic happened, and schedules, as well as access to tugboats and ships, were put on hold. Through this period, however, I was lucky in that I was able to continue photographing outdoors at the Colonial Terminals; many of these photos are included in this second workbook. I continued to meet my photographic goals for the entire series, but often in an unorderly sequence. Now back on a (slightly revised) schedule, this second workbook is a transition from a broad general overview to a concentration on specific boats and businesses. The goals set forth in the first workbook may have altered slightly, but my ultimate objective remains the same - to create a definitive photographic study that tells a story of the Port of Savannah and the people and ships that work in and along the Savannah River. I hope you continue with me on this journey. Welcome aboard! LIMITED EDITION: 500 SIGNED AND NUMBERED COPIES

Riding the tugboats of Crescent Towing in the Port of Savannah, and through photographs showing what these mighty little boats do. It is a story of escorting ships through a narrow river channel to their destination, turning the ship around in turning basins for their return to the ocean and pushing them into a berth. There is little that's routine about this job--huge objects the size of the Empire State Building floating in a river subject to tides, currents, and winds, in daylight and on moonless nights, in all kinds of weather. A wrong turn, the smallest of wrong moves, or an equipment failure can ground a ship with dire consequences for the crews, the ship and the entire port operation. The photographs also show the maintenance of the tugboats, their powerful engines and drive systems. The book touches on the life aboard, on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The skills divided amongst the crew members and the river and docking pilots that work with the tugboats to safely navigate and dock the ships.I am glad to have this opportunity to share both these photographs and what I learned being involved with the Crescent Towing tugboats.

Since its founding over 250 years ago, Savannah, Georgia has become a historic preservation gold mine, exhibiting a variety of architectural styles. However, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area experienced heavy economic growth, during which numerous buildings were demolished regardless of age or condition to make way for newer and supposedly better structures. The community lost many important landmarks, architectural masterpieces, and a piece of its history. Lost Savannah takes a close look at these vanished buildings to document their existence and role in Savannah's past. Drawing on collections of the Georgia Historical Society, a rich presentation of Savannah's public, private, and commercial architecture has been brought together in this unique photographic volume. Through vintage images, one can see the city's development and growth as well as its subsequent decay prior to the preservation movement. Lost Savannah examines individual buildings, such as Union Station and the Bulloch-Habersham House, as well as the evolution of Savannah's architectural landscape, including West Broad Street and Elbert Square.

The Colonial Group is a huge part of the story of the Port of Savannah, which I have been photographing for a number of years. I was delighted that Colonial gave me permission to photograph their Georgia Kaolin Terminal, known as GKT for short. The primary functions of GKT are two-fold. First and the most dramatic is receiving in by ship bulk dry cement, storing it in GKT's silo system and dispensing it into bulk carrier trucks. Second is receiving railroad car loads of Kaolin clay powder and breaking it down into super sacks, which are large bags, for shipment in ship containers bound for destinations around the world. The purpose of this photo study is to provide pictorial examples of how primary bulk materials are handled in one of America's major ports.
