Excerpt from The Point of View of Modern Education Every institution of the social world is now adjusting itself to the theory of evolution. The church, the home, and the school havebeen more tardy than science and industrial society in obeying its call, but the school is now seeking to conform, in its methods, to this new movement as rapidly as conditions will permit. This little volume is merely a series of suggestions, which the thoughtful teacher may find helpful in her study of children and of the relations of the school to the home. It is addressed quite as much to parents as to teachers and the author hopes it may help to bring the school and the home into a close and more sympathetic union. Excerpt from The Classroom Teacher, at Work in American Schools There is no reason to classify books as of higher or lower degree in a professional series. The teaching of beginning reading, the standards to be maintained in erecting school buildings and in their equipment, the organization of the supervisory and administrative staff, the control of public schools by a board of education that operates under a state law all are important in the equipment of a teacher charged with the education of a child in the first grade. If the school system is weak in any of these particulars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Scientific Study Teaching of Languages In a recent letter. You ask me for the latest news concerning the work In which you were so interested. You ask whether I have succeeded in correlating the various aspects of the problem in one homogeneous system of linguistic pedagogy. My answer takes the form of the present book. I have been able to recon struct the body of it from memory, and to augment the original documents by a large quantity of new material, and have finally ventured to submit it as my contribution to the ditcrature of linguistic pedagogy. Excerpt from A History of Education in Modern Times More striking characteristics of the book will probably be found in the emphasis laid upon educational institu tions and practices, rather than upon theoretical develop ment; and in the larger place given to American educa tion. The account of each educational movement has included at least an attempt to trace its influence upon the content, method, and organization of education in this country, while three chapters have been devoted exclusively to the rise of our educational system. For this somewhat special point of View, I trust that no apology is needed, as the book is intended primarily for use in the United States, and will be of service to our teachers largely as it succeeds in focusing the educational progress of this country. It will be quite possible, however, for those readers in England and other coun tries, who have been so hospitable in their reception of my former works, to neglect or curtail these parts of the book, and still have a body of material sufficient to represent satisfactorily the history of education during the past two centuries. Excerpt from Report on the Teaching of English in the United States, 1908 This brief report, the record of a very interesting half-year's work, was written for the University of London, as one of the conditions under which the Senate awarded the writer a Gilchrist Travelling Studentship. It has been duly approved as giving satisfactory evidence that the studentship was used for the purpose designed by the Trustees. In it is incorporated, by the courtesy of the Editor, the substance of an article on "English in the American Elementary School" which appeared in the Journal of Education for July, 1907, and also of a paper read before the Battersea and Wandsworth Educational Association in May, 1907. The writer desires to acknowledge gratefully the great kindness shown to her by the various Educational Authorities and the many American Teachers with whom she came in contact, who, by their willingness to put their syllabuses of work at her disposal, their frankness in discussing methods and results, and their generous enthusiasm for their work, did so much to make her stay in America both pleasant and profitable.
